excellent xiao long bao

tucked in a street alley in/near chinatown, joe’s shanghai serves boatloads of xiao long bao – it’s what they’re known for, and they’re delicious.

it gets super crowded, and you’ll probably end up sitting w/multiple strangers at your table if you’re a small party.

The xiao long bao are too big!

They’ve got the flavor right, and the soup runneth out at the right consistency (not too oily, but just thick enough to have you licking your plate if your’e not adept enough to keep all the soup in the spoon), but the soup dumplings are too big! A proper soup dumpling should fit in a soup spoon without overhang, lest the skin break and all those juices get lost by the wayside.

Dishes I tried:

Crab soup dumplings

A little on the dry side for my tastes

Moist and juicy. Like they are in Taiwan.

Overrated, but good

This place is overrated in my opinion. The food is good, but you can other restaurants nearby offer just as good without the wait.

Usually gets crowded by touristas and the like in Chinatown, but is still a good bet for a good soup dumpling. Also try the da lo mein, which is a mixed seafood-meat sauce over thickly cut noodles. Service is mixed. Still good if you’re up for a traditional runny sauced dumpling. I think the one in Flushing might actually be better, but also gets equally crowded on weekend evenings.

All time favourite when I visited NY before. Now that I am here, it’s a must go when friends visit. The siu lung bao overflows with tasty soup just burst in your mouth. Be careful when you bite into it. I can eat the whole basket all by myself….sooooo good.

Best shanghainese buns in Chinatown. The outer layer is thin the way I like it and extra soupy and tasty inside. I usually just order 2 of these and an extra side dish, typically the scallion pancake or beef or seafood rice cake. Sometimes I’ll get a veggie dish too. Worth the trip to Chinatown.
