mixed experience

I ate here in May 2007. It was only my second time having a sushi meal and it sure was hard deciding what to have! everything sounded incredible.

The food was quite tasty: the flavors were bold and the presentation was stunning. Service was very slow: food took over an hour to arrive. An automatic tip of 18 percent was added to the bill — definitely didn’t deserve it, I had to argue with the staff and our group leader intervened to have the tip removed.

Dishes I tried:

crab soup

It tasted like there was egg in the soup, and I don’t eat eggs so that was an unpleasant surprise.

3.5 stars -

Kaizen is a pricy Japanese restaurant in Westmount. I had the Steak Teriyaki which usually comes with grilled vegetables and rice but I asked to get Udon noodles and the waiter said that they have to charge extra. More on that later.

There was a couple right beside us who were pissed off about waiting for their food. The waiter informed them that on a busy night at a sushi restaurant it takes 45 minutes. They got into a fight with not only the waiter but with a table beside them. Dinner and a show.

The steak was moist and the teriyaki sauce very sweet and flavorful.

My steak cost $39.00 with an additional charge of $8.00 for Udon noodles….very unheard of for noodles to be charged that amount. Sara enjoyed her jumbo shrimp.

In all it was a bit pricey for steak as I could eat it someplace else for maybe $25-$30 and it would taste better.

The decor was elegant and the service a little to be desired but otherwise good company and an enjoyable experience.

Very good sushi, creative menus, they always seem to change things up every year or so. Had one of their lunch menus last time and thoroughly enjoyed it. Not cheap but good sushi in Montreal usually isn’t
