Psychedelic Brunch

Kitsch’n on Roscoe is a cool, funky place for eccentrically fun breakfast and lunch items. We almost didn’t find the restaurant because it was tucked away in a smaller neighborhood, away from all the large streets and intersections. There was already quite a crowd waiting outside the restaurant when we got there around 11am or so, and it was a bit of a wait, but when we stepped in, we were charmed by the retro-hip setup inside. Old school posters and board games lined the walls, while the table settings & chairs looked like they came out of the 70’s. Quite unique. The service was a bit spotty, only because it was quite busy, but we enjoyed the food when it finally came out and overall, had a good time there, soaking in the groovy atmosphere.

Dishes I tried:

Bayou Crab Cake Benedict

The crab cake was delicious, but the eggs could have used a bit of work. Interesting side of habanero cornbread hash accompanied the dish.

Coconut Crusted French Toast

The coconut/batter on the french toast was very unique and tasty. Fresh pineapples and raspberry sauce made it even better.

Yum. This sandwich was served open-faced with caramelized cheese blanketing a hearty layer of tuna salad on a sesame loaf. Very good, especially with a side of spicy curly fries.

Do we agree, Rachel Ray?

Rachel Ray famously came here when she visited Chicago for her $40-a-day program. Not that that’s a huge deal. If it had been Alton Brown, on the other hand…

Okay, seriousness. First of all, the dining area inside is absolutely tiny: 6 tables or so, but there is a beer garden and some nice sidewalk seating. They hit you very hard with the whole retro feel to the point where you feel like you have to close your eyes for a minute to keep from going insane. Not a big fan of the interior decorating.

The waitress and I did a little dance around the whole veggie burger issue; I love veggie burgers but don’t want to pay $8 for a Boca Burger, so I normally only order veggie burgers if the patties are made in-house.
“No, it’s not made in-house,” she said, “but I can tell you it’s very good.”
“So it’s not a Boca Burger or anything,” I said. (Sorry, I just really hate them)
“No,” she said, so I (with some hesitation) ordered the veggie burger.
Annnd upon biting into it, I was pretty sure it was a Gardenburger. Miss, did you really think a girl who was a vegan for years wouldn’t know a Gardenburger when she tasted it?

It had been sauteed in a pan for a decent crispiness, it came with avacado, and happily, they toasted the bun. But I wouldn’t order it again.

Spicey Fries

Creamy on the inside, the perfect amount of spice on the outside that melded with the potato instead of fighting it. Puuurfect.

With Honey-Mustard Dressing, which tasted homemade, it’s delicious.
