Mexican food — the thought conjures up plates of corn and flour tortillas, carne asada and refried beans and Spanish rice. But come to La Sirena Grill for the term “Mexican food” to be redefined. Their site says the restaurant is “Mexican grill with an edge” — and quite an edge it has. Take for example its popular “BBQ duck tamale” — a friend of mine fell in love with this layered drool-worthy mound of corn-chunky sweet masa topped, tender shredded duck pieces — hence the foodie outing of 7 people. But that’s not the only worthy item on the menu — the short ribs were also divine, melt in your mouth, sitting atop chipotle infused mashed potatoes. Though, the dish was pricey for only 2 and 1/3 boneless ribs and 2 really tiny squash-filled “empanadas” (imagine 2 bite-sized deep fried dumplings with a little dab of squash filling, each halved, and sitting cut side down in a row, on a pea puree visually reminiscent of a thick wasabi smear).
Great flavors, though not for everday dining (unless you have the money to burn). Might be a better place for a special night out… :)
