First impressions made way for fabulous food
I was here for supper. When I first arrived, two of our group were already there, but thinking about leaving. The music was too loud, they didn’t care for the menu, there was garbage around the building, etc. etc. The music videos overhead and on the stage beside us were noticeably distracting. (I liked the hiphop music, but they didn’t.) Our group leader got the music turned down to a manageable level, and convinced the doubters to stay.
The menu is basically one page of food and one page of drinks (with and without alcohol). The more expensive meals include a choice of side dish from the “accompagnements” section. Portions are HUGE and filling; do not be shy to ask for a doggie bag. Everything was boldly seasoned without being spicy. If you like beer and wine with your meal, choices are quite limited — we were told that Africans prefer to drink hard liquor.
Service was very pleasant and pretty good. There was one mixup with dishes at the table, where an extra dish of couscous was delivered to us. “Don’t worry about it,” the waitress assured us — which led us to believe that the couscous was free. We shared it and enjoyed it. It did appear on someone’s bill, but I left before the matter was fully resolved.
Would I go back? For the food, sure. For the loud music and the promised DJ at 11 pm? Probably not.
Dishes Tried:
Mafé
You get a bowl of oily peanut sauce containing chunks of tender beef and carrots. Beside it was a large plate of plain white rice. It wasn’t much to look at, but it was very flavorful and filling. I dumped the sauce on the rice in a valiant effort to soak up all the richness.
Couscous Royale with beef
This is cooked and served in a tajine. The golden couscous came with large slices of cabbage, and was mounded around a big chunk of tender beef. I also found a nugget of sweet potato. There was a buttery sauce served with it, but I didn’t taste the sauce. Very nice but would have liked more beef in it. The leftovers made a dandy lunch base the next day.
Ginger Juice
This is a non-alcoholic beverage made from fresh ginger. It was cold and refreshing, not too sweet, not carbonated. The waitress was clearly impressed that I had ordered this, and I share her enthusiasm! I would definitely have this again — perhaps with a little shot of rum?
Thiakry
There is only one dessert on the menu, of Senegalese / Gambian origin. It was milky and honey-sweetened, with tiny millet seeds throughout. I have never eaten anything like this before. And it was very good. it would probably take away the burn from overly spicy food.
