GREAT food, especially for those on a college budget! The calzones are huge and portions are very generous, and have been known to feed me and my friends for at least a couple of meals. Individual pizzas could easily feed two, although if you’re hungry enough…maybe not! :) The pizzas are fresh and warm, and the crust is absolutely delicious (it is specially made at the restaurant), sprinkled with parmesan cheese. They have a wide variety of toppings, including teriyaki tofu, any vegetable you could think of, and lots of meat options. If none of the pizzas on the menu are appealing (which would be surprising!) you can always create your own.
There is also a large salad (either full or half) and hoagie menu for those not craving pizza. There’s something for everyone!
The hummus appetizer is really great…better than hummus I’ve had at “real” Mediterranean restaurants! It has basil and paprika as added touches, and it is served with warm pita bread. Definitely enough for at least 2 or 3 to share. Also, the pretzels (either salted or with parmesan cheese) are very popular – they are made out of the pizza dough and are served fresh out of the oven with either pizza sauce or mustard. However, they can take around 10-15 minutes to arrive at the table, since they are made-to-order, so if you want them, order them as soon as possible.
Moderately priced, cheap beer ($12 pitchers for most beers, $5 for PBR). As an added bonus, pitchers are at a discounted price when it’s raining outside (the restaurant spouses the tag line, “when it rains, it pours!”) Service can vary depending on the night, but the restaurant is usually crowded, loud, and very lively!
Mellow is also known for Trivia Night on Wednesdays – however, in order to get a seat, you really have to go early! Don’t expect to be able to sit if you arrive after 8pm (trivia starts at around 9pm).
On a personal note, they have my favorite beer, Allagash White (a Maine beer) which is very difficult to find in restaurants, especially in Virginia :)
