The restaurant is only 3 months old, so it clearly hasn’t gotten much press. We were the only ones there. It’s a real shame that more people aren’t in there, since the food is full of sabor cubano!
The server was attentive and polite. Our meal started with mediocre toasted rolls served with butter. We asked for water with lemon. It came with lime.
We ordered drinks – I got an Ironbeer (a yummy Cuban soda that tastes like bubblegum or the mixture you get when you mix all the sodas from a fountain together), my husband ordered a Guanaba milkshake (apparently guanaba is a fruit that resembles a kiwi – rounds, brown, and hairy – but tastes a little like guava with the texture of a banana) which he very much enjoyed, and my son had a mango milkshake which lacked flavor.
My son and I ordered the Paella Valenciana, which the server promptly informed us would take 25-30 minutes to prepare, so we decided to tide ourselves over with appetizers – Empanadas. We had 2 chicken and 1 beef, all were well seasoned and served fresh and hot. The dough on the outside tasted fresh. The paella (which serves 2) came with a soup and/or salad for both people ordering it. My son had the salad, a plate filled with large pieces of lettuce, tomato slices, and onions. The ranch was brought on the side (a nice touch, I thought, since I usually have to ask for it that way). I had the chicken soup, a rich broth with fideos, potatoes, and shredded chicken. It was amazing! The paella was also well flavored and my husband raved about sandwich Cubana. The portions were humongous – we were stuffed and took home more than half of the sandwhich and 3/4 of the paella.
My son also took home a rice pudding for dessert, half which he promptly ate upon arriving home. He had the other had just an hour later, because it was “so good!” Desserts are hard to resist at this place because it’s the first thing you see as you walk in. The display case filled with flan, rice pudding, and other whipped cream topped deserts beacons to you from the get go.
Overall, we were very impressed with the food and satisfied with the service at Mi Habana Cafe. it was good enough that I plan to take my Cuban father there for a real test of its authenticity.
