Morimoto is the New York City interpretation of Executive Chef Masaharu Morimoto’s namesake Philadelphia restaurant that is co-owned with restaurateur Stephen Starr. Designed by world renowned architect Tadao Ando, the restaurant’s entrance features the world’s largest Japanese Noren curtain set against a massive façade of austere steel. Inside is an extraordinary open kitchen surrounded by a 24-seat sushi bar where diners can watch Morimoto and his chefs at work. On every level of the restaurant guests enjoy the elaborate menu where East meets West. Glass partitions create a private atmosphere between tables and a wall made of 17,000 spring water bottles add a touch of New York drama to this tranquil atmosphere. Guests have the option to dine on the top floor or congregate in the lower lounge for cocktails and snacks.

Ehhh... overrated

Being an Iron Chef enthusiast, I was REALLY excited to come here! The decor was awesome, the bathrooms were super cool, and Chef Morimoto himself stopped by our table and said hello.

That being said… I didn’t actually like the food. I really really wanted to… but just didn’t. Though, I feel like Morimoto’s reputation is such that I will give him the shadow of the doubt and just chalk it up to an off night, or the fact that i didn’t go with the omakase.

I ordered the Surf and Turf, and the kobe filet sauce was just WAY too strong, the hamachi ribbons were kind of tasteless and a little on the mushy side, and the crushed cirtrus and avocado was just WAY too tangy. I also ordered hamachi and uni nigiri on the side, and they were sadly disappointing as well. Basically, I didn’t like any of my dinner. my friend got the duck duck duck, which she seemed to like. she took her boyfriend back the next week (also an Iron Chef afficionado), and she said the Surf and Turf was MUCH better that time around. So I dunno, maybe I just got unlucky with a sous chef having a bad day.

However, my poor dinner was almost erased by the spectacularness of the earl grey praline creme brulee. now THAT was heaven.

Dishes I tried:

Surf and Turf

I didn’t have a good experience with it, but maybe you will. kobe beef filet with hamachi ribbons, crushed cirtrus and avocado, and herbed potatoes

Good food, better sake

Morimoto does not disappoint. Who else would have thought guacamole and sour cream go well with tuna tartare? Try the sparkling sake and Morimoto’s own sakes. Omakase menu is a good choice. Each dish was beautifully and creatively presented. Sashimi was great. Service was friendly, but forgetful at times.

Dishes I tried:

Kobe beef tartare

Sauce and cut were excellent, just barely overcooked for my taste.

Chef’s selection of 9 courses. You can’t go wrong, courses are well chosen to cover the menu, presentation is creative.

This place has interesting exotic dishes. Trendy, two floors, cool bathrooms! Loved it, can’t wait to go back again. Next time I’m trying the lobster dish I saw everyone eating!
The most freshest and best fish is used… it seriously just melts in your mouth. And no wonder, it is flown in from Japan every 3 days!

Great restaurant! I don’t even know where to begin. I went there for lunch a few weeks ago and enjoyed myself thoroughly. The ambience and atmosphere of the restaurant was typical of the Meat Packing District area. Very flashy modern decor with every waiter and waitress extremely attractive. Our waitress was fantastic. She was incredibly helpful in suggesting orders and was not stuck up or snobby as most restaurants are in that are of NYC. The food was to die for. I split a plate of sushi with my parents as an appetizer. We had a tuna roll, salmon and avocado roll, and an eel with avocado roll. The eel with the avocado was my favorite. Completely unique in comparison to the other eel and avocado rolls that I had. It had a delicate crunch, which was a nice compliment to that roll. For lunch, I ordered the Kobe beef bento box. It was quite the large serving. The bento box was of a higher class. The kobe beef was served with a salad, miso clam soup, seafood tempura with a creme fraiche sauce instead of the regular dipping sauce, and 6 pieces of sashimi and 3 pieces of sushi. The food was to die for. I was incredibly stuffed, but my mom insisted on trying desserts. We had some kind of bread pudding, which was alright. It was plated like a deconstructed bread pudding w/ the bread crumbles on the side. We also ordered some hazelnut cake which was fantastic. The sides to it were a pomegranite gelee and a very tart green apple. It was definitely an interesting dessert and I’d definitely order it again. I also ordered the White lily cocktail. I dont even know what was in it. But it was absolutely delicious. Sweet, refreshing, and without the taste of alcohol. Its a must order for sure. Morimoto was a great experience, and I’ll be sure to return another time!

Every dish is perfectly plated and ready to be photographed. But this place isn’t just about looks. Start with the kobe beef carpaccio or the rock shrimp tempura. If you’re running on a tight budget, head downstairs to the lounge and order sushi. The maki is hearty, yet reasonably priced. And if you like cocktails, try a Morimotini or a White Lily. If you’re not convinced, check out the website and tell me that doesn’t whet your appetite.
