A hidden gem on a busy street! We went for dinner here this past Sunday and were surprised to have the restaurant all to ourselves. It was recognized as one of Washingtonian Magazine’s Best Bargains, so we decided to give it a try and were very glad we did. It looks like they are doing some renovations – the walls were a modern wood, though the floor was being redone. They had Thai music playing, which added to the atmosphere.
We started with the shrimp bikini and the crispy wontons – both of which were great! The shrimp bikini were whole shrimped wrapped with a wonton skin, but with a hidden kick of ginger! The wontons while fried were not greasy and were a combo of shrimp and chicken. We even got the wontons for free based on the entrees we ordered!
Entrees included the generous portion of Pineapple fried rice which had lots of shrimp and chicken in it. The Pla Paow (grilled tilapia in a banana leaf with veggies) was a hit too – hubby’s plate was empty! My son was able to partake in their kids menu which for $6 included apple juice and a good sized kid entree – he enjoyed his tofu and rice (veggies not as much!)
Granted the restaurant was empty, but service was still good and the waitress was very friendly. This would be a great place to go with a large group or with a family. They also have tatami seating (with floor cutouts) for those who want a different dining experience.
Nark Kara is a nice addition to the Thai dining scene in Bethesda and worth checking out.
