I’ve driven by The Nook thousands of times. I even knew it was there. It is so hidden, tucked away in the back corner of a shit strip mall in West LA you’d never think to check it out. So why did I check it out, cause I heard the food kicks ass. This place is small, a hobbit hole of a restaurant, but it’s nice, simple, clean and fresh feeling, cafe, bistro like.
The menu consists of Salads, Homemade Soups, Pulled Pork Open Faced, Tuna Sandwich, Salmon Wrap, Chicken Club, Catfish Burrito, Three Cheese Mac, Nook Burger, Brown Rice Bowl and a Calamari Steak. That was most of the menu, it’s small, but interesting.
As predictable as the Sun rising, Raiders losing or Celebrity Marriages not working out I ordered the Nook Burger, which I heard was great. We also ordered the Three Cheese Mac and a Caesar Salad.
The Mac came out first, a good size portion, but really unless you’re 8, who eats only Mac and Cheese as their dinner. And it’s 9 bucks, and there are no half portions or sides of it. I don’t get that. It was good. I definitely would order it again, but only if I had two other people to split it with. It was cheesy, gooey and crispy on top. And the blend of the Manchego, Cheddar and Gruyere was a good mix.
At the sight of my burger my hopes were as high as Amy Winehouse on a bender with Christopher Lloyd… I’m not sure if Christopher Lloyd rolls like that but we call can dream, can’t we…
This burger comes out on a Grilled Rustic roll. The burger is covered with gruyere cheese, red and white onion jam and baby arugula. The meat flavor was good, not great. The toppings were a little different and flavorful. The cheese was perfect and the bread tasted great but it was too thick. The burger was served with a slaw, which was zesty and delicious and a good complement to the burger.
I like The Nook. It’s a good little restaurant in a shitty location. However, I’d rather have a great restaurant in a bad location then a horrible restaurant in a great location. People will find and search out great food and it seems like they are finding it at The Nook.
