The Best Thai in Gaithersburg

I can’t believe no one has written about this restaurant nestled in Old Town Gaithersburg! I’ve been coming here for years, so shame on me for not doing a review sooner!

I had dinner tonight with a friend. We’ve been there before and I take other friends with me there for both lunch & dinner.

I have always been warmly greeted by the owners/staff. Service has been attentive & the atmosphere I like better now after the renovations a few years ago. It’s very serene with light music in the background & elegant silk Thai fabric for the table and chairs covers. (Ok, the train station is around the corner and the trains of course do pass by, but to me that’s part of the charm).

Tonight I ordered my favorites. Tom Ka Gai (Coconut milk soup with lemongrass, chicken & red chili), Green Curry with shrimp & of course the traditional Pad Thai. Old Siam really makes the food flavorful and each bite reminds me how much I love Thai food and why I need to eat here more often! I splurged for desert even though I had no room & got the Lemon Sorbet (served in a lemon shell). Perfect way to end the meal.

I’m excited I have leftovers for tomorrow! Restaurants may come & go but if you love Thai give Old Siam a try and you won’t be disappointed!

My favorite soup! Coconut milk, lemongrass, a little chicken, red chilies and a dash of vinegar. LOVE THIS SO MUCH! The taste is amazing!

Nicely spiced and you can order as hot as you like. I love the tamatillos in it too and the shrimp were a very good size. Plus leftovers the next day is great. Make some fresh rice at home, add your remaining Curry that has melding overnight and grown in intensity for an even hotter dish. I love my eyes watering and nose running. That’s my kind of hot!

Exquisite Thai Cuisine

I have passed this restaurant hundreds of times, in Old Downtown Gaithersburg, without having the pleasure of stepping inside – until now.

It’s moniker of “Exquisite Thai Cuisine” is more than appropriate. While being an older building, with ample parking, it has an interior done with great taste – which also extends to the food.

The staff is friendly, cordial and knowledgeable. Everything is served on beautiful china, and one can see great care and pride in both the presentation of the food, and the manner in which it is served. We didn’t see a salad on the menu, but when we asked about one it was beautifully described and offered without any problem.

The kitchen is quick and exacting. All our dishes were very well made, came out hot and in plentiful portions. The prices are extremely reasonable making this restaurant a treasure to be enjoyed many times over. We will be back!

Dishes I tried:

Commonly known as Chicken with Cashews, this mild dish (can be spiced up to your taste) had all the right ingrediaents: white meat chicken, scallions, onions and some of the biggest cashews I have seen recently. Came with a bowl of jasmine rice. Server offered “that next time” she can make it spicier if I like it. Too often Thai restaurants inundate you with chili pepper spices which result in returning the dish to the kitchen. This way was very appreciated.

Delectible crisp deep fried vegetarian spring rolls (4) served with sweet sauce was a meal unto itself. No grease whatsoever, these were delicious.

White meat chicken grilled and skewered served with a delicious cucumber salad and peanut sauce.

Crisp and oh-so-fresh lettuce, tomato slices, boiled egg quarters, onions and sliced red and green peppers served with peanut sauce. When described, our server also offered it with tofu, which we declined. The freshness of this sald, served as a shared appetizer set the stage for the rest of this well done meal.
