Fancy setting, mediocre food
The front of this place is a loud, trendy bar, with a lot of young people drinking sake. Towards the middle is a Japanese “robata” grill, with a seating area, and at the back is a quieter seating area.
The first thing that I noticed was that all the waiters, regardless of ethnicity, said “Irrashaimase!!!!”, which might be cool, but the non-Japanese people said it horribly. If you don’t know how to pronounce it right, don’t even bother trying. Anyway, small detail.
The sushi was so frozen it barely passed the “floppy test” (wiggling it on your chopstick to see if it’s thawed enough to move). The sushi rice was not cooked properly, either.
The entrees were pretty good and presented well, but at these prices, I would expect higher quality than just “pretty good”. Otherwise, I would expect at least more quantity.
The sake selection is extensive, however, so maybe if you drown yourself with sake, you won’t notice the bad food.

08/10/2006So, is the “floppy test” the traditional way to gauge sushi freshness? :)
