excellent service, so-so food

i came to picasso with high hopes, and i left a bit disappointed.

service – absolutely excellent. our server was professional, friendly, and funny. our sommelier knew the obscurest details about each of the wines’ history we inquired on, and impressed my entire family.

ambience – we sat next to this huge family part of +10 who had 4-5 little children running around. it was so loud i felt like i was at a bar during happy hour. once they left though, it was a nice quiet ambience, more in line w/what you might expect at a high-end establishment.

food – sadly, this place falls under “high-end restaurant that serves looks better than it tastes fancy-shmancy food for uber-$$$$”. you get a choice between menu degustation ($105) or prix fixe menu ($95). at these prices, i expected top notch, mind-blowing food, but i felt a lot of my courses were just so-so.

i won’t be coming back again, and won’t be recommending it to my friends.

Dishes I tried:

4 pieces of cute quail were juicy, but a little too salty. salad wasn’t much of a salad (not much flavor), but i ate it up.

3 pieces of shrimp in a huge bowl (check out the picture – almost ridiculous). the 3 balls are poached fruit, which was quite delicious!

Pigeon with Risotto

the pigeon, like the quail, was a little too salty, but juicy. the risotto wasn’t creamy, so not what i was expecting, but interesting.

my favorite course of the meal! the fruit was sweet, squishy, and juicy! sitting on top of a chocolate cookie of some sort, made for a very rich dessert. i’d order this dessert again in a heartbeat!

quite flavorful, fatty, and plentiful in the serving. a bit too salty (again) for me, but maybe that’s how it’s prepared? quite tasty, though.

Chocolate Cake with raspberry ice cream

the heavy, super-rich chocolate cake is well complemented by the chilly, tart raspberry ice cream. the heavy chocolate makes this dish not for the faint of sweet tooths.

Bellagio restaurant pricey, but memorable

This restaurant sits in the very luxurious and elegant Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas, which means world-class food and a classy atmosphere. There are genuine Picasso paintings hung about this restaurant, and if you’re lucky, you can get a front row seat to view the Bellagio fountains as well. It is lovely and romantic.

All the food here is fantastic, but the reason this restaurant makes my list of memorable restaurants is for one reason – the foie gras. It is seriously heaven on a plate. Flavorful and sweet, the foie gras absolutely melts in your mouth. It’s the type of dish you can’t forget and wish you could keep coming back to… and if it weren’t so hard on the wallet, I would. I’ve had foie gras several other times, and they really, really, don’t even come close.

Expect to pay about $100 per person (not including drinks, tax, or tip), so be prepared. There are two options here – the 5-course Menu Dégustation (basically the special featured items), or the 4-course Prix Fixe. The foie gras will be on the Menu Dégustation, which is slightly more expensive… but I have to say it is entirely worth it. It’s that good.

If you like foie gras, can afford it, and are in Vegas, it’s a must-try.

Probably the single most delicious bite of food I’ve ever had in my entire life. EVER. I’d give this 100 stars if I could.
