Yes, it’s true. First, let me mention that I’ve most often been described as a carnivore so vegetarian food usually just doesn’t have much appeal to me. I also hail from New York, so Pizza is a sacred experience for me.

Pizza Nosh is a small pizzaria tucked away in the far corner of a strip mall just off the Reyes Adobe road exit of the 101. It’s not easy to find as it has no visibility from the street – you’ve got to know it’s there.

When I first walked in, it smelled good. Glancing at the menu, I saw the usual Italian fare – Parmigiana, Lasagna, Meatball Sub, and Pizza. Searching further through the pizza, I realized there was something amiss – no pepperoni, no sausage. Enquiring as to the missing items, I was politely informed that this was a Kosher vegetarian pizza joint, the only meat-like substances they served were vegetarian meatballs. My enthusiasm wilted. Having suffered through several attempts to choke down soy burgers, and meatless meats in the past, I was skeptical.

One of the owners, Danny, assured me that the meatballs were good and that I was about to have a great experience. He offered me some to taste with my meal. I ordered the eggplant parmigiana, and a margarita pizza. Little did I know, I was in for a pleasant surprise.

I sat with my arms crossed, waiting for my food. Not really expecting anything to write home about. And then it came…

It was GREAT!!!! The eggplant parm was absolutely delicious, the pizza fantastic (NY style, but with lots of yummy garlic. The sauce, the crust, and the seasonings were just perfect. And then the grand finale…I was served a few meatballs in a tin of sauce, and covered with cheese. Not only were the meatballs indistinguishable from real meat (they’re apparently soy and breading), but they were so delicious as to be among the best “meatballs” I’ve ever tasted.

I’ve since returned many times. I’ve also dragged many skeptical friends and converted them too. The wonderfully tasty food, and great service will ensure that I keep returning to Pizza Nosh as long as they’re there. Kosher vegetarian pizza! Who knew?
