Culver City’s Fraîche opened to wide acclaim in 2007, winning best new restaurant of the year from both Angeleno and Los Angeles magazines and Top 10 Best New Restaurants in the country by influential NY Times Restaurant Critic Frank Bruni. The Fraîche team now heads West to Santa Monica to open its second outpost with same inspiration: Provençal bistros and Tuscan osterias where simple, rustic dishes are crafted from ingredients obtained at a village market that morning.

disappointed

i suppose the night just didn’t start off well seeing as how we dropped $70 at the bar for 4 drinks, then ended up waiting 20 minutes for a table even though we had made reservations several days in advance.

as for the food, it was actually pretty good but at a price which didn’t feel worth it. about 1/3 of the menu is $13-$20 gourmet pizza, another 1/3 $30-40 entrees, and the last 1/3 your appetizers/salads/etc.

we stuck with the pizzas which were “gourmet,” in the sense that the toppings tend to be high-end, not-your-typical pizza ingredients (as well as sparser) such as prosciutto or eggplant mixed with the likes of rosemary or arugula. i thoroughly enjoyed my pizza, but i’d say (as uncouth as it sounds) that i’d probably enjoy my CPK wild mushroom pizza equally if not more.

our server, granted she was trying, seemed to be new to the business and not up to the level of professionalism that we thought to be at par given the prices/ambiance.

ambiance is loud, trendy, and an odd contrast of chic, but not. the open kitchen cooks look like they could work at in ‘n out, and the servers dress like they’re in a diner.

overall, the food is good so i wouldn’t mind coming back ( just as long as i wasn’t paying.)

Dishes I tried:

i love prosciutto so my eyes were immediately drawn to this pizza. the prosciutto isn’t cut and plopped on the pizza in its long thin deli slices, which made biting the pizza tricky/annoying as all the toppings just come off with one bite. the arugula and red onions with the oil work well in terms of flavors complementing one another, i just wish it were easier to eat.

PATHEITIC EXCUSE FOR A RESTAURANT!!!

I WOULD NEVER GO TO THIS RESTAURANT AGAIN.. THE SERVICE WAS HORRIBLE, THE MANAGERS WERE HOSTILE AND THE FOOD WAS AVERAGE. Think of the absolute WORST time you could possibly have at a restaurant and that is exactly what i endured at this pathetic restaurant. As we entered they told us there was no table available, as i was staring directly at an open table .. they made us wait 20 mins and then sat us at the exact table that was open 20 mins before. Our waiter, who obviously was hoping she was anywhere but there serving us, had no knowledge of the menu and when a question was asked, she acted as though we had committed a deadly sin. she took our orders and we did not see her for the rest of the night, The manager/ owner named Perry was rude and unhelpful he reemed us for not understanding the “concept” of the restaurnat. After it took 50 minutes to get our entrees (which were cold) we were yelled at once again when we asked why the pizzas we ordered were not there yet . all in all Oh and we were stuck with a 300.00 bill for 4 people. SEVERLY OVERPRICED!

RIVA SUCKS!

ABSOLUTELY THE WORST SERVICE EVER!
WILL NEVER GO BACK.

4 of us went to eat there and all of the food items took forever to arrive. The server took 20min just to take our order. An hour and a half later we still had not gotten all of our entrees. At that point we spoke with the manager about the poor service and in turn he verbally insulted us for being “uneducated” as to why it takes 45min for a pizza. He was so rude that we got up and left.
