My new favorite spot for ramen

I’d been wanting to try this new ramen spot for some time now, and this weekend I finally got a chance to. Samurai Noodles occupies a very small space on the west side outside of the Uwajimaya market, and it’s easy to miss it. Inside the decor is sparse and clean, with about 9 small tables. Orders are placed fast-food style, at the counter, and your order is brought to your table when it’s done.

One aspect of Samurai Noodles that shows they’re serious about their noodles is that diners can specify the amount of tenderness in the ramen – soft, medium or hard. I chose “medium” and was very happy with my choice – the noodles were perfectly resilient and chewy, as opposed to the instant ramen I usually make.

Coming with a group of friends, I was able to try lots of different flavors and found all of them to my liking. The prices were very reasonable as well, so I’ll definitely be coming back here in the future.

Dishes I tried:

This “combo” bowl can be ordered with your choice of meat – I chose pork. I thought the pork turned out well, but my friends mentioned the port was even more tender at previous visits. The combo comes with seaweed, egg and bamboo shoots to add some substance to the ramen.

Tetsu "Hell Fire"

The hottest of the hot options offered here, the cold noodles come in a separate bowl from the flaming-red dipping soup. I really liked the flavor of the soup – each dip was a quick shock to the senses that would subside quickly. The only downside is that there wasn’t much else to the dish besides noodles.

not your instant maruchan ramen :)

the noodles are made to your choice of done-ness … we ordered our noodles “medium”, which made them a nice and chewy al dente consistency (and hence, a very different ramen experience than adding boiling water to a supermarket package!)

i’ve never been to a ramen house before, so i don’t have a point of comparison, but as far as soup noodles go, this was a great choice for a quick and inexpensive dinner on a cold rainy evening! (and we have so many of those around here don’t we.. :))

also conveniently located right on the uwajimaya block, so you can even park in the uwajimaya lot and get validation. (yay!)

Dishes I tried:

chicken broth ramen

a clear chicken broth, with the ramen noodles, green onions, seaweed, and several pieces of tender white meat chicken. i had chosen to replace the cha siu bbq pork with chicken, but actually, i did try some pork later on and it was quite tasty :)

The concept was great – great great idea. Bad execution. Ramen noodles were terrible – bad flavor. Too bad, this place had so much potential.

The chicken-pork broth was not too bad.

Firm noodles (adjustable) and great broth make...

Firm noodles (adjustable) and great broth make this place a must-try for any Ramen lover. Really those two factors can make or break a ramen place in my eyes. A few years ago, I really thought there was no good Ramen in Seattle and one had to trek about 2 1/2 hours (plus border wait time) to Vancouver for good quality ramen. But Samurai Noodles has changed this and so far takes the cake for best Ramen in Seattle.

Because of it’s proximity to the stadiums, this makes a great pre-game stop (Mariners or Seahawks) for those that don’t necessarily like to load up on game-day sausages.

Variety of noodle ‘tenderness’, different types of soup/broth (pork, chicken, soy sauce, or combination of) make this a great place for ramen :)
but my favourite is still Pork Tonkotsu, with a side order of egg :D
