Smoky Goodness

Wow, this place was packed when we went on a Friday night; there were tons of families and young people crowded everywhere. The interior is really snug but it definitely has a fun & rowdy atmosphere. Overall, the dishes were plentiful and satisfying, but the truly lasting part of the meal is the authentic aromas—you’ll be smelling like Korean BBQ long after the meal has been finished, so don’t wear your nice clothes!

Dishes I tried:

They took it easy with the black pepper, so it came out pretty good. It’s a fine dish to accompany other meatier items, especially the BBQ, but I thought the noodles were a bit too… clumpy?

This was as fun to cook as to eat. The marinade was fantastic, and I enjoyed eating it with the ends just a bit burnt for that crispy effect.

A thicker cut of meat straight off the rib. Also a tasty item, and they even gave us the huge bone to BBQ!

I could just eat this all night long—I just love doughy pancake-y stuff, especially with tons of goodies packed inside (too bad we finished it so fast).

Although I wasn’t completely smitten by every single side dish that they brought out, I wanted to put 5 stars down just because there were so many tiny platters with so many varieties! It was a flood of all kinds of meats, veggies, and kimchi’s, and we barely had room to put everything on our table—this is truly fun dining!

authentic, but just ok

after reading good things about this place, i was so excited to finally get a chance to eat here. but as we pulled into its super small parking lot, i realized that i’d already eaten here many many years ago w/my family. oh well. =p

FOOD: definitely authentic, but somewhat hit/miss . we couldn’t do the cook-it-yourself bbq (you have to order 2 or more bbq dishes), so we might have had a more fun time if we had. oh, FYI korean tends to be more pricey in general so don’t come here if you’re looking for a cheap eat.

SERVICE: probably deserves 1-star, but that’s korean service for you. don’t expect stellar attention, and you’ll be ok. (if you need something, you gotta ask).

AMBIENCE: great for large groups, big families – you can be loud & it’s ok. not a fancy or upscale kind of place, but more simple & homely.

OVERALL: one of the neat things about this place is that it’s open 24 hrs…so it’s a late-night option to consider, if you don’t mind smelling like bbq afterwards. would i come back? eh…probably, just b/c it’s authentic and one of the few korean bbq places i know.

crispy on the outside, filled w/small pieces of seafood, and served w/a sweet sesame-soy sauce. a tasty dish, but not the freshest – we could tell it had been cooked earlier and just refried/reheated – but it was still good.

basically, a mix-it-yourself korean fried rice in a hot stone bowl. one of my favorite dishes, and they do it right here. throw in some hot sauce, and it’s delicious!

we weren’t able to cook our own, so this bulgogi tasted like old bulgogi, cooked earlier in the day. i guess that’s what you get w/a open 24-hrs kind of place.

holy cow it was drenched in black pepper! it made this dish really difficult to eat. usually, i gobble this stuff up like i can’t get enough, but someone got a little crazy w/the black pepper in this chap chae.

Just discovered

Just discovered San Soo Gap San and love it. Totally hole-in-the-wall in a little strip mall on Western Ave in Lincoln Square. And it’s open 24 hours so you can get that Korean BBQ fix at 3am if you want. When we went for lunch on a Wednesday, it was packed full of Korean families and businesspeople; always a good sign!
