Living in downtown Palo Alto has its perks, but it also has its downsides. One of the most glaring is the lack of good, affordable food. Isn’t this supposed to be a college town?
After teasing us all summer with renovations, a reasonably-priced taqueria has opened one block off downtown! This new restaurant opened on October 8, 2009 and includes a nice decor (granite counters, nice chandeliers/fans, flat screen TV), but is quite small with seating for only about 14 or so. The owner apparently owns another Sancho’s Taqueria in Redwood City and this is the second store.
Sancho’s has the standard fare of burritos and tacos, but it also includes dinner plates of enchiladas and shrimp dishes. While prices are at a slight premium to some Mountain View taquerias, it is still a bargain in downtown Palo Alto. The best deal is probably the tacos at $1.65 each.
Beware: this place is cash only (for the time being!)
The best part of the burrito was the ginormous size of it! It took me 3 sittings to finish! The meat was tasty, although there were a few chewy chunks that I’m not a fan of. The burrito was absolutely loaded with goodness, though, so I’m not complaining. It also passed the “fridge test” which is that it is still good a few hours later after sticking it in the fridge.
The marinated pork was scrumptious! The tacos are street-style, built on two small tortillas, loaded with meat, onions and cilantro. They really do pile on the meat which means 2 little street tacos is enough for me for lunch. What a deal!
