Surprisingly pleased by the noodles

Ok I admit it, my knowledge of Chinese restaurants in the International District isn’t as good as it should be. Good Japanese or Vietnamese restaurants in the I-District are easy to find, but for some reason I’d always felt that the Chinese restaurants on the Eastside were better than their I-District counterparts.

Dining at Shanghai Garden was a solid first step in redeeming the local Chinese restaurants, IMO. I wasn’t expecting much, and the decor inside is typical for such a restaurant – a large fish tank and some pretty bare walls save for some unappealing pictures of food. Points to them for being cleaner than most other restaurants in the area.

But the main attraction here are the noodles, especially the hand shaved ones. There’s a large selection of different kinds of noodles, and seeing that I really liked what I tried, I’ll definitely be coming back to try the others.

All in all, Shanghai Garden is a solid pick to satisfy your noodle cravings.

Above average presentation, great beefy soup flavor, and nicely chewy noodles. The beef was tender and not overcooked, too. My only wish was that the portions were larger. =)

BEST NOODLES I HAVE EVER HAD

The hand shaved noodles are the best I have ever tried. I crave them all the time, which hurts alittle since I live over 200 miles away. I can not find anything that compares.

Dishes I tried:

The barley green noodles are worth the trip

Pretty good for lunch, and jetleigh’s right about the barley green noodles and that their preparations are relatively healthy. Sichuanese Cuisine and Hing Loon are too close for any one of them to get all my business.

Dishes I tried:

Shrimp, peanuts, and sauce. ~12 large shrimp at lunch. Liked the flavor, though not a lot of complexity; by request, they spiced it up w/roasted chilis. I’d replace 2/3rd of the peanuts with vegetables.

A lunch-time staple.

I work nearby at Amazon, so I may be a bit jaded.
Shanghai Garden gets 4 stars though for being good food and clean. I’ve taken candidates here for interviews many times. I’ve tried about half the things on the menu.

best handshaven Chinese noodles

Shanghai style handshaven noodles is what I come here for. The other food is consistently good too, and it is probably the cleanest of all the Chinese restaurants in Seattle’s Chinatown. But the highlight for me is the noodles which they are known for. Get the barley (green) ones with chicken and egg!

Had lunch here this weekend. The hand shaven...

Had lunch here this weekend. The hand shaven noodlesoups were pretty good (I had the braised beef one), but the shanghai dumplings are only mediocre (it was not juicy enough, and the dumpling wraps were way too thick).
