Sol is exactly what this town needs!

Sol mexican cantina is truly a breath of fresh air for a town that definitely needed a casual, family friendly restaurant at affordable prices. I went on the second saturday it was open, and yes it was busy SURPISE its a brand new restaraunt, you’re gonna wait! It was well worth the wait. The food was on point, the staff was friendly and helpful. There IS live guacamole “as advertised” and its in big BOLD letters on the menu so you cannot miss it. The guacamole was made table side to your liking, and it was delicious. Everything was on point from top to bottom. Affordable prices, courteous staff and guess what, the most important thing good food and good portions. Sorry to charlie who doesn’t want to wait at a new restaurant sounds like he was just looking to complain. And fyi 18% gratuity for parties of 6 or more is standard. Must have been your first time out to eat charlie. NO WONDER YOUR SO HUNGRY!! 5 stars!!!

Dishes I tried:

Fajita Steak Burrito

Large burrito stuffed with cheese, refried beans, and fresh vegetables. The star of the dish in is the carne asada beef which was very tender and well seasoned. Took half of it home because it was so big and so good.

The Sun in Shining in Branchburg

I have dined at Sol twice since they have opened and couldnt be more impressed. This area has been lacking great mexican cuisine and Sol offers exceptional service coupled with good drinks and great food. From the guacamole prepared tableside to your liking to the variety of margaritas, Sol offers a unique dining experience for all. The portions are filling and the prices are very reasonable. On my first visit I enjoyed the tequila lime garlic shrimp as an appetizer, it was flavorful and refreshing. For an entree I had the mahi mahi tacos – the layers of flavors from the mahi to the avocado, black beans and corn made this a delicious choice. The drink specials downstairs in the bar area are something to look forward to also. $1 domestic drafts and tacos on Monday nights and $2 margaritas on Thursday. It cant get much better than that. Sol is a ray of sunshine and I look forward to going again soon.

The Sun Shines @ Sol in Branchburg

I just read the previous review & I honestly don’t think Charlie ate at Sol. I have been there three times & I can’t remember a moment when I didn’t look up & see guacamole being made tableside (it is a definite must!!). I can say I have seen a great improvement since I made my first visit on their opening day, June 1st (especially with the chips & salsa). Charlie is missing out stating he would never go back, but that is okay. The only bad thing about Sol is that everyone else wants to go there & there may be a wait on the weekends for a table.
The Margarita recipe has been perfected with fresh lime & a good selection of reasonably priced tequilas. e missing out but that is okay. I suggest the Guacamole Tableside to start, Tequila Shrimp or the Veggie Enchiladaa. My son had the wings & said they were the best! For entrees I can’t seem to get enough of the burritos. I am working my way through the list. My boyfriend had the sizzling seafood combo fajitas & beans & rice the first few times. It is a HUGE portion & even though he is a big guy he had lots to wrap. He had the Mahi tacos last time & loved them. They even put them in hard shells per his request. The only disappointment was the Sopapillas for dessert. Try the flan if you have room. A welcome change from all the Italian in the area. A definite goto.

Dishes I tried:

Veggie Enchiladas

Broccoli, mushrooms and corn stuffed in a homemade corn torilla, topped with melted cheese. The sauce on this is a roasted tomato to die for sauce. Lots of veggies with lots of texture (veggies not over cooked & mushy)

Everything Excellent

I read all the other reviews and couldnt agree more (except for the first review from “Charlie” whom of which obviously has not actually ever been to, none the less eaten at, Sol.) The atmosphere is wonderful, the food is exceptional, the staff is beyond accommadating, and the margaritas are made to perfection. I’ve been twice (once with family, and once for drinks with friends) and will continue to frequent Sol for as long as I remain in the area.

Bad food, Bad Service, Bad Place

A 7:00 reservation for a large group, we were finally seated at 7:30. No drink orders until 8:00, the waitress put her fingers on the rim of and in each water glass. The orders were messed up….for example: a vegan ordered a simple all vegetable burrito, he got the burrito with tons of cheese in it. The fish tacos smelled like bad fish and I am not convinced they were mahi-mahi as advertised. The portions are extremely small and there is absolutely no flavor. The waitress would disappear for long periods of time and she would blame everyone else for the problems.

I would not go back here, ever, and I would not recommend this place to anyone! We paid entirely too much for the service, food and wait.

If we were not already paying gratuity (which is a group of 6, come on, that’s small) I would not have even come close to giving her the 18% tip.

1 star because of the chips and salsa. No tableside guacamole from what we could see as advertised!
