Old world, old school Italian
I went to taste of Italy with some friends, one of whom owns a fine dining establishment himself. The place is a little hole in the wall on a busy intersection and doesn’t have much parking. Don’t let that deter you though, the food and people are excellent.
I started with a glass of the house cabernet which was just OK. For house wine opt for the Chianti. The service was excellent as were the appetizers. We had fried Calamari, which were nice size pieces done to crispy perfection. The fried Zucchini were cut in french fry size strips and was also very good. My favorite however were the roasted stuffed banana peppers. They were stuffed with sausage and served in Marinara sauce. Mouth watering!
The salad was pretty basic but the Minestrone soup was outstanding. The bread is also very good.
My entree was the Veal and Shrimp Franciase. The veal was pounded thin and fork tender. The shrimp were lightly battered and fried similar to the veal. They are served in a nice white wine sauce and were absolutely delicious. This also came with a side of spaghetti with meat sauce. I love spaghetti and theirs did not dissapoint.
A spaghetti dinner starts at $13.95 and I think the most expensive menu item was $21.95. Prices were a bit on the high side but overall value is excellent with the large portions and never ending bread. I’d say the averge price is closer to $20 per entree. With appetizers, drinks, tax and tip it came to about $50 per person.
Our group of six hungry men left well satisfied and nicely full. My only regret is that I could only eat one dinner as all menu items were quite inviting. I highly recommend Taste of Italy.
Dishes Tried:
Veal and Shrimp Franciase
The dish included three strips of thinly pounded veal and three shrimp served in a white wine sauce. Presentation was basic but the flavors were excellent. The veal was lightly coated, fork tender and surprisingly juicy for being so thin. The shrimp were also lightly coated but very tender and fairly large.
