In 1969, artistic craftsmen of Disneyland fame created a romantic rendezvous in the cellar of the old California Hotel. The Cellar is the perfect setting for an intimate and romantic evening of fine dining. Patrons will find themselves enjoying fine French cuisine while comfortably seated in soft velvet-backed chairs upholstered in rich mellow leather and surrounded by a dimly lit interior. Intimate and cozy, the four dining rooms are elegant amid structured arches and cave-like walls, decorated with wine casks and silver lanterns. Culinary excellence abounds with only the finest and freshest foods prepared in a lighter version of classical French cuisine. The Cellar, winner of The Wine Spectator Grand Award, was selected in 1992 as one of the top six restaurants in the world for its outstanding wine list which currently features over 1300 selections from around the world. The Cellar is One of America's 10 Best French Restaurants, and Restaurant of the Year for 2005.

The Cellar

The cellar is one of a few stereotypical “fancy french restaurants” that southen california boasts, except its dungeon themed, sort of. It feeds off its reputation and its aesthetics these days because it seems to have lost its place in the sun and its somewhat of a novelty. You have to climb down a basement until you find the hidden entrance to a place that takes itself too seriously, and then you have to sit in this beautiful little cellar, and you have to eat pretty good food. Its a fun place to go once every 5 years, unless youre unoriginal, then come for valentines a bunch. however, as you may have guessed from the name, do not #!*$ with the cellar when it comes to wine, because they will win. i am not a sommelier, but if one happens to see chateau lafite-rothschild on a list and its prenatal as far as one are concerned then one can take this to be a passable wine list. if you find yourself here then just go all out, break the bank as it were. but with the ill-fated(and reasonably priced) “cafe frances” having been out of the picture for sometime now, this is where one can go.

Dishes I tried:

Entrecôte au Grand Poivre

Prime New York sirloin peppered steak, with a demi-glace, pepper and cream reduction with a little brandy which is good very rare.
