Consistently good food

This has become one of our “must go” places every time we’re in town. Good food at reasonable prices with a welcoming atmosphere, we are never disappointed. The only negative is the service, which more often than not is abrupt, rushed and breathless. This time it was Michael, who always left us with the vague impression that we had been rude for interrupting him… even when just asking for sugar for our freshly-poured coffee (his response was to come flying back, dump 20 packets on the table, and sprint off again). But good food!

Salmon Benedict at The Huckleberry

Salmon Benedict

I have a tendency to stick with the latkes here but decided to color outside the lines and ordered the salmon benedict. Very good… and the bottle of hot sauce (made by Huckleberry’s sister, Aji) stays on the table so feel free to liberally douse your breakfast potatoes!

Modern Twist on American Comfort Food

The Huckleberry is a fun, elegant and low-key restaurant in the heart of old town Louisville. The restaurateurs responsible for such fine dining establishments as Aji, Dushanbe Teahouse and Leaf bring “funky country” style dining to a historical Lousiville landmark. (Formerly the home of Karen’s Country Kitchen)

The atmosphere is great and the food is wonderful and service tends to be friendly and fast. Lunch, Breakfast, Dinner —fine bakery items. American classics like pot pie, meatloaf and sammies have an upscale-dining twist (garlic aioili, fresh produce, house made sauce, baked goods) and a little international flair in the form of Italian and Mediterranean items. Country breakfasts can’t be beat and feature great hand cut breakfast taters and homemade biscuits. If you’ve never had FRIED GREEN TOMATOES – try them here! Tart tomato disks are battered, fried and served with a remoulade. Nothing is pretentious, just low key casual dining.

They do, however, offer an afternoon HIGH TEA service which includes the fancy china, the tiered tower of savoury and sweet treats, fresh flowers, and linen table cloths. The restaurant features a spectacularly HUGE tea menu (green, black, herbal and imported) but even this is not a stuffy high-brow affair. These require a reservation but a fun way to treat children, co-workers or family in town for a visit — bring your teddy bears.

Disappointed

I have never had a bad meal here, so I’m willing to think this was a fluke. I ordered breakfast just after 3 p.m. The waiter said it wasn’t a problem, and the chef agreed, even though they stop serving breakfast @ 3. The eggs were slimey & undercooked, the potatoes tasted like they’d been sitting in the pan since 7 a.m. & were disgusting & hard as rocks. When I asked for butter for my biscuit it tasted like the refrigerator. I should’ve complained, but since their food has always been stellar I didn’t. I was just grateful I didn’t get sick after this meal. However, it was not worth the $10 I paid, and although I will go back, it’ll be a long time, & I certainly won’t order breakfast for lunch!!
