My husband and I often walk to Toasties on Irving Street to pick up a crab melt and turkey avocado sandwich, respectively. It’s a simple sandwich shop with two and four-tops throughout, a lot of steel chairs and with a flat screen TV in the middle of the room. It’s not decorated with a lot of warmth, in fact, it kind of reminds me of a collegiate bachelor pad. They do have a collection of black and white photographs of old San Francisco on the walls which is cool.
I am looking forward to trying their breakfast menu which is now served from 8am to noon everyday. They have beignets, buttermilk pancakes, a variety of omelettes and scrambles and traditional eggs, bacon, hash, sausages and the like. They also have Mickey Mouse pancakes and Minnie Meals for kids.
There are two new sandwiches that aren’t on their printed menu yet: corned beef with roasted red pepper, sauteed bell pepper, grilled onions, mayo and provolone for $6.95; and reuben with hot pastrami, sauerkraut, grilled onions, Thousand Island dressing and swiss cheese for $7.95. Mmm, I’m getting hungry!
Business must be good, because in addition to expanding their menu, they have opened a second location on Ulloa in West Portal.
Toasties uses deliciously “toastie” Napa Valley hoagie bread for all of their sandwiches. It is soooo good when it is heated up. I always get my sandwich with the works – lettuce, tomatoes, onions, mayo, mustard, olive oil vinaigrette (another one of their secrets to wonderful tasting sandwiches), and Swiss cheese with lots of smoked turkey breast and creamy avocado. Nummy.
This crab melt is like a crab-artichoke dip on a roll. It has lots of Dungeness crab meat, artichoke hearts, shallots, onions, Parmesan cheese and spices. It’s topped with melty Monterey Jack cheese.
