It was hard to believe that the buzz around San Francisco is that Tommy’s has some of the best Mexican food around town. The atmoshere is worth a visit but for the price I would just head there for the margaritas after dining somewhere else.
The bar was packed with hungry people waiting for a table. The echo and laughter from the dining areas lingered throughout while many large parties filled the long tables.
The tortilla chips were average, but there was something missing in the salsa. There was an overpowering tomato based flavor in everything I ate including the salsa. The chile relleno was more like “pepper parmigiana” with marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese. The Mexican flavors were lacking.
Tommy’s is a great place for a large group, but if quality is what you prefer there are many great Mexican restaurants elsewhere in San Francisco.
