Great sushi in the Village

You’ll get some pretty fresh fish here. Can’t say you’ll be happy with what you ordered undoubtedly. You won’t be overwhelmed with glee… just satisfied, that is hopefully. Is it worth the price? No, not considering that you’ll be paying a good chunk of change for sushi and still be left hungry. Don’t get me wrong, the quality is definitely here. But, for me personally, I just feel paying that much for a joint that is basically a “mom & pop” Japanese restuarant with minimal (and may I add cheesy) decorations, average waitservice, typical presentation, and a cramped restaurant front is wrong. I’d actually give this place a 3.5 star but since this isn’t possible I’m rounding down. Guess you should just try it out and see what you think of this place.

Other FYI’s: expect to wait a long time to be seated as no RSVPs are accepted; it’s cash only unless you have an AMEX card (never leave home without it haha…); this place will close randomly (apparently it does so well it will close early on a Saturday night if the owners feel like it).

Dishes I tried:

Chirashi

Nice selection of fish. Well seasoned rice. Fresh fish. Lacking in quantity however.

Very tasty. You’ll scarf this down in no time at all (is it b/c it’s that good or is it b/c there’s that little… hmm?)

Very fresh fish. Nothing spectacular though, have had better.

Fresh, Huge pieces of Sushi

Tomoe is yet another NYC eatery where diners are forced to wait in long lines on the sidewalk, but the wait is worth the meal you’ll get to eat. Food porn from Tomoe can be found here

Giant pieces of fish

Be prepared to wait at least 30 minutes (usually closer to an hour) if you choose to eat here during peak hours. But unless it’s blizzarding out, it’s well worth the wait.

It’s not the best sushi in the city, nor is it the cheapest, but it has the best price-to-quality ratio in town. The slices of fish regularly span about three inches, and the hamachi here is pure buttery goodness.

Dishes I tried:

Spicy scallop roll

I LOVE this place for sushi, it’s not your typical fancy chi-chi New York sushi place, because here they focus on the fish. Best deal in New York for the quality you get.

Tell me again why everyone is RAVING about this restaurant. For one, it’s a very cramped space and there’s always some ridiculously long line outside. Yes, the sushi is fresh, but lots of places have fresh sushi. You just need to work a little to find a good place with good prices.
