Viva Tequila!
Tres Agaves - SF is dedicated to quality and fun. Our tequila bar features fresh, hand-squeezed lime margaritas and other tasty tequila cocktails, plus Mexican beers on tap. Our food is new to the United States, but we're just taking our cue from the traditional restaurants of Jalisco Mexico. We serve wholesome, soulful renditions of Jaliscan classics using the freshest possible ingredients from Bay Area farmers. And like our counterparts in the special region of Mexico, all side items are included with your meal and served family style.
Rocks, No Salt!

mmm...tequila

if you like tequila, this is the place to come. right by at&t park, tres agaves is a very hip, trendy, up-scale mexican restaurant with a well stocked tequila bar. we went on a wednesday evening and it was packed!

the reason to come is definitely for the drinks. they have several tequila flights to sample as well as a wide range of margaritas. we had the house margarita which was very good.

while the drinks were all high quality, the food was just ok. i had the carnitas which was well seasoned and very tender, but the accompanying side dishes were very average.

Dishes I tried:

Upscale Mexican

Whenever somebody mentions going to El Torito or Chevy’s or some other sit down Mexican restaurant, I get on my soap box and vehemently argue how these “fancy” Mexican places are not worth the money and how hole-in-the-wall burrito joints are 10x better in terms of taste, flavors, and variety.

Tres Agaves may be the one place that will turn my soap box over. The food and atmosphere are definitely not the same as your corner burrito shop, but, it is much better than other sit down Mexican restaurants.

Dishes I tried:

It always starts with the chips. Large, warm baskets of tortilla chips accompanied by guacomole, pico de gallo, and salsa. All homemade, all delicious.

Tasty but would have worked better with tortillas or rice

I may be biased because I believe that SOMA is becoming the stripmall of SF with cookie cutter aesthetics for financial district yuppies, but overall, I thought Tres Agaves was okay. I think the food was fine, but nothing to write home about. If I’m going to eat “upscale” Mexican food, I’d rather head to Maya or Majita in the Ferry Building. And I was especially unhappy given the size of the bill at the end of the night.

Tres Agaves is a great place for a few reasons: great food, good, friendly service, tasty margaritas (amazing tequila selection), and they stay open late—very important to this NYC-based late eater! If you have to wait for a table, amuse yourself by watching the bartenders make pitchers—they are serious about their margaritas! There’s a lively bar crowd, so you can skip dinner and duck in for drinks. But I recommend eating AND drinking!

Great margaritas and tequila selection – the most comprehensive I’ve ever seen, and the staff are the most knowledgeable about the tequilas, growing regions, and distillers. Oh and, there are lots of delicious things to go with your tequila – queso fresco, sopes de pollo, carnitas, yum yum!

top-shelf tequila selection may be the draw, but the authentic jalisco-style dishes keep you coming back. several reviewers talk about the carnitas, and they do rock, but to get the true guadalajaran flava from the state and land of tequila, try “carne en su jugos”—meat in its juices. side dish of refried beans with chorizo that comes with the meal is also satisfying. no wonder the dodgers ball team swings by to close this joint after sweeping the giants (ouch).
