Take the Good With the Bad
Love Thai food and I think Tum Rup has a lot to offer. There menu has lots of options and always give you the choice of vegetarian which is nice. You also get to choose your spice levels. The hotness often changes due to whoever is running the kitchen so if you’re looking for mild just go with the mild.
I’ve been to Tum Rup several times and really enjoy the food. I think the prices are reasonable and the portions are large. The service is generally friendly, but on the other hand the overall attentiveness of the service is lacking. Especially on the weekend evening when it tends to get chaotic, the service is often slow and not very personal. Also, I’ve had a couple takeout orders when I wanted to avoid the crowd and my order has never been right, but I forgive.
A good alternative to Tum Rup’s small dining area and lack of service is it’s sister restaurant Roat Osha. You will find basically all of the same dished on the menu here, plus there is a free parking lot and an actual patio. The tap beer selection is also much better at Roat Osha.
Overall I enjoy Tum Rup from time to time. The service isn’t grade A, but the food generally makes up for that fact.
Dishes I tried:
Crying Tiger Salad
A lettuce wedge salad topped with grilled sliced beef tenderloin that has been tossed with Thai chilies, herbs and lemon juice and grilled. The whole thing is topped off with scallions, mint, kaffir lime leaves and cilantro. Also served with cucumbers. This is an awesome salad minus the carbs and it will fill you up. Flavorful and refreshing, a great summer dish.
Wonton Egg Noodle Soup
Really simple and homey soup. A light flavored broth filled with chicken wontons, fresh skinny egg noodles, bean sprouts, red onion slices and topped with cilantro. The bowl is huge so you definitely get your money’s worth. You can also chose the spice level for the soup. I think medium spice gives the soup a little extra flavor and kick. The large bowl only contains about 3-4 wontons. I wish there was more, but at the same time you get plenty of noodles. A good simple dish that makes you feel good.
