Wexler's serves a delicious menu of New American BBQ in an intimate, rustic-chic spot situated in the city's Financial District. Using a California farm to table approach, Executive Chef Charlie Kleinman puts a tasty new spin on tradition by pulling inspiration from various regional BBQ styles and creating unique new dishes using California's bounty of fresh, artisanal ingredients. You will find smoked meats flavored with house made dry rubs alongside dishes driven by the freshest produce Chef Kleinman can find. From smoking our own chilies to making our own onion powder, Wexler's is committed to using and creating the best ingredients. A strong lineup of American beverages (American cocktails, beer, and wine) complement the flavors of the food.

Wexler's brings barbecue to the FiDi

Wexler’s hearty sandwiches served on Acme bread are full of flavor and inspiration, and are definitely worth a trip to the Financial District, if you don’t already work/live around there. The flaked yellowfin tuna with braised kale, black olive aioli and celery root remoulade is my favorite so far. The mesquite and applewood smoked “pulled” pork sandwich with watermelon vinegar and green peach and cabbage slaw is a close second. The one and only 4505 Meats Mission Dog ($9) is a popular item, served with bacon, pickled Fresno chilies and carmelized onions.

Wexler’s has only been open for a month, but service is, in one word, impressive. Tim, our server, is talented and classy, knowing how to balance friendliness with professionalism. He knew every key ingredient in every dish and was charming as well as informative. He was attentive but didn’t hover. When our beverages ran low, he replaced them with new glasses without our having to ask. And, despite the fact that by 12:15 p.m., the small dining room was packed and people were actually lined up to get a seat, he kept his cool.

While it is nice to know that so many people in the Financial District have already discovered this place, it got quite noisy with a roomful of people chattering at once. I suppose the euphemism would be “lively.” Certainly, this is not the ideal venue for stuffy business meetings. Rather, it’s a happy place to break bread with friends and enjoy ‘cue infused with chef Kleinman’s innovative style and fresh, seasonal, local ingredients.

This sandwich proves that tuna, kale and black olives are meant to be together. It is so savory and delicious, a really hearty and satisfying lunch. I opted to eat the celery root remoulade on the side rather than pile it on top of my sando, and it was a nice, creamy, rich accompaniment.

If you enjoy mesquite flavor, then you’ll like this sandwich. The pork is done in their smoker which has mesquite and applewood in it. The sandwich comes with a tart watermelon vinegar for dipping and green peach and cabbage slaw.

Bourbon banana cream pie

I liked this dessert because it wasn’t overly sweet and you could taste the bourbon in it. Chef Kleinman believes that all desserts should have salt, and this one has a light sprinkling of fleur de sel on top. The caramel sauce added richness without being too goopy (syrupy sweet).
