We had a reservation — made several weeks ago — for two people at 7 o’clock. Arriving at 7, we were told to wait by the bar. After 20 minutes, we inquired about the status of our table. We were told it would be a matter of a few more minutes. We noticed, though, that some people who arrived after us were seated before us, and the hostess seemed to be picking people at random from the crowded bar area for tables, as no names were ever called — she would just go up to someone, grab them and tell them a table was ready.
When we complained at 7:45 that we had been waiting for 3/4 of a nour, a maitre d’ shrugged and said “All these peopel have been waiting.” But when we told him it was unacceptable to be made to wait more than 45 minutes for a reserved table, he suddenly ushered us in — to a cramped dark table in the back room.
Within a few seconds we decided the hell with this place, and told the maitre d’ the lack of respect shown to customers by him and the rest of the staff was appalling. He seemed shocked that we weren’t thrilled just to be in the damn place.
Besides the boorish behavior of the staff, the restaurant is cramped and noisy. And the martini I had while waiting was very watery — not the good stiff drink you expect from a steak house. (The potato chips were tasty, though.)
We walked over to Keen’s and had a wonderful meal — great porterhouse steak and sides, a terrific Cesar salad and solicitous service and a warm ambience.
Keen’s is a marvelous and highly recommended restaurant. Only a fool or a masochist would put up with the arrogant nonsense of Wolfgang’s.
