4.0Shortly after Yum Yum changed hands, the quality of the fish was a little unpredictable. But for the past several months, every time we have picked up sushi and sashimi there, we have been very pleased. Everything tastes fresh and they give big slices of fish. In their nigiri, the fish sits atop smaller beds of rice with a hint of wasabi, just as it should. I know that the polite way to eat sushi is to put it into your mouth in one bite, but the pieces here are too big to abide by that rule, at least for me. But that’s a good thing, the sushi is generous and hearty, a good value for your buck.
We’ve tried just about everything on the menu, and apart from the natto hand roll (fermented soy bean) and amaebi (sweet raw shrimp) which I think are acquired tastes, all of it hits the mark. The rolls are good – my favorites are the saba roll – saba and green onion, and the spicy hamachi roll with chopped hamachi, lettuce, cucumber, avocado and spicy sauce. They certainly don’t scrimp on the fish; they actually overstuff the roll with yellowtail so that it’s practically falling out of the ends. My husband always orders the tuna salad roll which is pretty addicting, although it may sound weird if you haven’t had it before. It’s got your classic style tuna salad with lettuce, tomato, avocado, cucumber and masago. My husband is a big fan of the salmon belly roll, too, which has smoked salmon belly with green onion. My kids especially enjoy the California Roll, takuwan roll, ebi nigiri and unagi nigiri.
For a hole-in-the-wall, no frills spot, Yum Yum’s fish is pretty impressive. They take orders until 7:15pm and close at 7:30pm everyday.
My big test for sushi eateries is the quality of their saba. I’m a total saba junkie. The saba nigiri (and the saba rolls I mentioned earlier) get two thumbs up. It’s always fresh, melts in your mouth, and tastes…“fishy.” I know fish isn’t usually supposed to taste fishy, but with saba, it should have that characteristic fishy, slightly lemony – flavor. The saba nigiri also comes with a sprinkling of sesame seeds on top for a little crunch and added flavor.

5.0I’ve been going here for years. The prices are great and the sushi is fresh. It love ordering the california rolls, mango hamachi rolls and sashimi sets. I never ate there. I’d usually call in the order and pick it up 15 minutes later.
I wouldn’t go here on a date. It’s a great place to pick up some sushi.
one word describes it all: FRESH!

4.0I took off one star only because of shop decor and friendly flies, the food is very good and IMO excellent for the prices. The service has always been friendly, especially considering the amount of traffice they get.
More on the shop, it’s tiny and shares space with a fish market/counter, there are a few tiny chairs and tables and I’ve seen strips of (occupied) fly strips hanging from the ceiling so it’s REALLY no frills but the food area and counters are clean. I have never seen flies buzzing around the work area or landing on the food, etc. tho. There also isn’t a rank fishy smell or mildew that you’d sometimes find in some “hole in the wall” restaurants.
The sushi is excellent with a very wide variety, more than you can find in surrounding neighborhood restaurants. Prices are very good to excellent for the variety in their menu as well as the quality. The fish has always been very fresh and you can taste the sweetness, the rice is light/medium seasoned (you can taste the tang of the vinegar but it’s not overpowering). Their spicy rolls and marinates are mild (I’m not a fan of spicy foods so YMMV), they don’t burn a whole in your tongue but they do give you a little kick.
They have a high turnover, mostly takeout, but they do churn out orders at a very impressive speed (usually 10 to 15 minutes during lunch on a normal day, 20ish minutes during a busy day) with very few mistakes. I’ve been a customer for almost a decade and have only had two or three orders with mistakes. I think most of that was just because the person taking my order didn’t speak English as their primary language and staticky cell phones. They DO always repeat the order back to you though, so if you pay attention you’ll be able to catch any mistakes.
..and I don’t mean to sound snarky? But it’s quite novel to go to a Japanese restaurant and be served by Japanese people and hear Cantonese or Korean in the background ;)

5.0Super fresh fish at great prices (= best for take-out because of tiny dining space and lack of ambience). The rolls are only ok… go for the pokie sashimi (hamachi & albacore tuna are the best) and the chirashi bowl.

5.0Fish market = super fresh sushi. Probably some of the best in town. It doesn’t look like much, but they make up for it in great fresh food. Order to go if you don’t like sitting in a fish market while eating your sushi.
