I like to travel and I like to eat at local establishments when possible. I can eat at a chain restaurant anytime, anywhere. I like to know of the places that stay below the website radar that a local recommends.

they're back!!!
I had a few mediocre meals here so we hadn’t been back in a while, however, we went again last Saturday night and it was great!!
I had the French Dip (big surprise) hubby had the classic chicken sandwich and we shared an order of baked clams. All were excellent!
The Restaurant At Four Doors Down

a nice surprise
Myself, hubby and 14 year old daughter decided to try this place on July4th!
When you enter, a sign directs you to seat yourself. The decor of this place reminds me of a “gramma’s house”...the wallpaper is busy floral in tones of pink, the place is dimly lit. There is a fireplace in the dining area which must be absoutely beautiful in the winter!
We chose a nice table, sat down and were almost immediately tended to with bread and water. Our server also came promptly. I ordered fettucine carbonara, hubby the stuffed flounder and my daughter ordered chicken strips. One comment I have is that the place was FREEZIING! My 14 year old daughter went out to the car to get a sweatshirt and I had my hubby turn off the registers near us.
The salad was excellent with very fresh and tasty cherry tomatoes. The stuffed flounder was cooked perfectly and hubby thoroughly enjoyed it. This dish also came with a vegetable on the side: local zucchini. He didn’t touch this, so I picked at it…it was FABULOUS! Very fresh and cooked to perfection in a little olive oil and spices. Not soggy yet not hard. I ate almost every bit and this was after I had given up eating my own huge meal!
My fettucine was very good as well…came with mushrooms, bacon and peas in the cream sauce. The presentation was lovely: Grated cheese covered the top and then on that was a beautiful, fragrant sprig of basil. The portion was well beyond the size of my stomach…but I tried!
I was surprised at the freshness of the dishes because the place looks (and is) old – historic in fact – which you can read about on the menu.
All in all I urge you not to pass by but to go on in!

Good Times at Tully's
This was a lot of fun and even better, the food was good, portions large!
We visited this place while on a SUNY Binghamton campus tour. It is a lively, sports-themed, casual dining restaurant. There are TV’s showing all the sports, all the time almost anywhere you look. There is also an arcade with lots of games – my kids 14, 18 & 22 loved it!
The food was great AND affordable – which is a definite PLUS for its proximity to campus. We were seated promptly with a party of 7. Our waitress was as polite as can be and got every order correct – which as a NYer I truly appreciate polite and accurate service!

Rendezvous

prices up and dishes down!
This pains me to write because I know the owner…but: We arrived at about 6:00 PM and were seated immediately. The hostess brought our drink order and we perused the menu. We were NEVER told what the specials were, but I got up and read them from the blackboard around the corner.
Our salads arrived although we ordered an appetizer. They were fine. After a while came our appetizer (which surprised me both in the order the food arrived, I thought she forgt the appetizer – and the time it took to come since there were many empty tables) which, sadly, was sub-par. The top was burned and the middle soupy. These were baked clams and they are loose by recipe here, but the top is never burned!
Our meal came out and I hardly recognized my lump of coal! It was my filet mignon! Yikes!!!
We looked at each other and proceeded to eat. Away from the edges, the meat was tasty and tender, but the journey to get to it ruined the meat!
the shining star of my meal was the lobster tail…perfecto!!
As for our waitress, she was curt and not personable. Luckily our hostess was and she made sure that our drinks were always filled!
Enough said…sorry Cliff!
-
filet mignon
butterflied and charred…too charred though. The inside was tender, but the outside almost inedible.
-
surf and turf
the filet was tender once inside the charred outside, but it wasted much of the cut!
The lobster tail was PERFECT

nothing special...
My husband and I visited on Sunday November 18, 2007 at about 5:30 PM. It took a long time to be seated even though the place was nearly empty! Took a long time to be waited on and a long time to be served! The room was dim and cold and I could not figure out why I heard good things about this place!
When our food finally came it was nothing special at all…same fare you get from any take-out.
We won’t be back!

Spicy's BBQ

ooohh Spicy!! Not your typical BBQ!
We love Spicy’s. This is not the typical BBQ. The sauce is not red BBQ sauce, but a yellow sauce that you can see the pepper flakes in. It is a sweet & spicy sauce.
We have never eaten inside, always to go. This is the old fashioned train car type building with everything made right in front of you: chicken, ribs, shrimp, collard greens, poppers, cornbread, sweet potato pie…you’d swear you were down south!
Call ahead if you are not staying. Also, they don’t take credit cards.

chicken breast cutlet sandwich
this is a deep fried chicken cutlet sandwich. Ask for this “dipped” – which means dipped in the BBQ sauce. There are a slew of other condiments you can get on it, but be sure you get it “dipped”!

Lava Rock Café

we like-a lot the lava rock
After viewing the lava rocks we hit the Lava Rock. Kids and hubby had the standard fare of chicken and burgers. I tried some sort of fish – it was terrific. It was a fun atmosphere and we actually considered getting one of those corny photos “on the lava.” The place was truly too busy to help with the photo if we decided we wanted it. Here’s a hint: there is some sort of special for dessert…I don’t remember what it was, but GET IT!

Rocky's Pizza & BBQ

Best pizza on the Big Island!
We happened across this restaurant while meandering around the Keauhou Shopping Center. My husband was attracted by the very large beers that they serve. We went in…got a table immediately…were served promptly by a very nice waitress named “Lulu” (which was shortened from a very long Hawaiian name)...enjoyed really good pizza and beer (no beer for the kids though!)..paid and left. It was that easy and that good!
