"New here, be nice"

Hi, I am 36, live in Toronto, and travel with my girlfriend as often as possible, one of the biggest benefits is finding incredible food that can’t be found at home.

I love cheap fresh food, and tend to shy away from anything fancy.

Elephant & Castle

Aug 3, 2007 Link

Losing their taste

Few years back wandered into the Elephant and Castle for a drink, and since their menu looked so good I decided to give it a try. The menu was mostly pub grub, very english. I ordered the roast beef stuffed yorkshire pudding, it came perched on a bed of mashed potatoes, and slashered in gravy. It was delicious, the roast beef was tender juicy and very flavorful, and the yorkshire pudding was perfect. A good gravy too. I went back several times for the same dish (and a few pints of strongbow LOL)

But after not visiting for a while, I recently went back and was unhappy that the prices had all been increased, and when I ordered my beloved yorkshire pudding, it had shrunk, and the meat seemed like sliced deli meat. I was really disaponted.

I’ve stopped in a few times since, and mostly stuck with the burger (which is ok, but nothing special).

I miss the old days when the food was good, and the value was better, I hope they shape up

Messini Authentic Gyros

The absolute best gyro’s in Toronto!. Unlike most places that use the big stick of meat paste, messini’s uses real meat, they have a choice of chicken, pork, or lamb. I normally have pork, and the unique thing about these guys is that on the pita with the gyros meat, they put french frys in it. Another great thing about these guys is their greek salad, it is a proper greek salad, no lettuce, just peppers, onions, lots of feta and some olive oil.

Whenever I go, I always start with the greek fries, they are dollar chips that are covere4d in feta chese, olive oil, then put into a salamander to melt and crisp up the cheese. They have desserts, but I’ve always been to full to try them.

La Belle Province

My first poutine

Many years ago, on my first visit to Montreal it was La Belle Province that I decided to stop at for a bowl of poutine (french fries with cheddar cheese curds covered in gravy) That kind of started a tradition, and every time I go to the city, I make a point of stopping for a bowl of poutine and a couple of hot dogs (they are a big deal in Montreal, they are steamed and served with mustard, relish, onions and coleslaw)

I have since figured out that they are far from the best poutine in the city, in fact they are almost like the McDonald’s of poutine lol, but they are right downtown, and open late. Another plus is, they seem to put more cheese on their poutine than any other place.

The best ice cream I have ever had!!

I had read raves about this place on chowhound, and needed to try it out. My first visit, the pear cider ice cream caught my eye, and after sampling all iknds of other flavors ended up being my favorite. Over 2 days, I tried the chocolate cherry (wonderful for dark chocolate lovers) chestnut (sweet with a great aftertaste) grapefruit (as bitter and refreshng as the real thing) chai masala (my second favorite, I could taste it before it reached my mouth, the scent was so wonderfully strong) milk chocolate (tasted just like chocolate milk)

I really can’t wait to have this ice cream again, it is truly the best I have ever had, and I am sad they are not here in Toronto.

I really wanted to rate this place badly, just because the service was so unbelievably slow (it took about 45 minutes for a hamburger and 2 orders of poutine) but the food was so good I had to forgive them.

It’s a small neighborhood place that really took some searching, and since it’s not in a tourist district, the staff, and the menu are all french. It wasn’t too tough to figure out how to order poutine (fries with cheddar cheese curds and gravy)(plus the version I had included bacon and fried onions)

The burger was good, nothing special, but wow, the poutine blew me away, I recommend it to anyone.

Dumpling House Restaurant

walking past the dumpling house (very close to Kensington Market) My attention was caught by their front window, it is here that they stand and make their signature dish, the dumplings. Many people walking alonmg Spadina will stop to watch them for a minute, I decided to sample them. It was $6.00 for a dozen fried dumplings(chose pork and chives out of the 10-15 vaieties available) They were delivered on a large plate that looked like 1 giant dumpling (because they end up all stuck together after they are fried) They were delicious. All the sauces on the table guaranteed that every one would taste different.

I highly recommend this place, a great quick snack, the staff are very friendly, the service is quick, and the food is fantastic.

insane amounts of food!!!

I read about this place long before going, and even though I had been told what to expect, I still could not believe the size of the dish these guys are famous for. The one pound BLT sandwich holds one whole pound of bacon!! It was impossible for 2 of us to even dream of eating it all.

The rest of the menu looks great too, I have had the corned beef hash with eggs, and the western ommelette in my 2 visits. Both were huge and very tasty. Highly recommend it to anyone passing through Birch Run

Jack Astor's Bar & Grill

Jun 13, 2007 Link

Horrible

I live near the Scarborough Town Centre, and was very excited to see Jack Astor’s being built because for years the only food at the mall was at the food court. I remembered a few trips to the JA’s in Mississauga, and how great the food was, so I was expecting the same. Man was I wrong. First off, the service is horrible, none of the servers seem capable of keeping up with the large number of tables they are assigned. Used to be that as soon as you sat down, they would bring you a complimentary loaf of fresh baked garlic bread, they still have the bread, but now they charge you for it (and it’s nowhere near as good as it was. The menu was made over a while back, and they tried adding a bunch of entrees that their kitchen staff seems unable to make properly.

I went a few times, and was disapointed every time, I’ve since stopped going. Stay away, the food is overpriced garbagr

Fat Fish Blue

Great Cajun

I’ve only been here twice, but if I am ever in town again I will certainly eat at FFB.

Last time I was there (around a year ago) started with the Southern Fried Dill Pickles 5.59 cajun mayo & vapor sauce for dipping

Wow the were good, I wish I could find food like that in Toronto.

For dinner I had Muffuletta grilled ffb focaccia bread topped with french quarter olive puree, jack cheese lettuce & tomato traditional: (ham, pepperoni, & salami) 7.89

It was nearly as good as the muffaletta at Napoleon House in New Orleans!! Plus it was served with delicious sweet potato fries!

I was sad I was too stuffed for dessert since the meal was so good I’m sure it would have blown me away.

So when in Cleveland, be sure to have at least one meal here
