Hi, I am 36, live in Toronto, and travel with my girlfriend as often as possible, one of the biggest benefits is finding incredible food that can’t be found at home.

I love cheap fresh food, and tend to shy away from anything fancy.

Losing their taste

Few years back wandered into the Elephant and Castle for a drink, and since their menu looked so good I decided to give it a try.
The menu was mostly pub grub, very english.
I ordered the roast beef stuffed yorkshire pudding, it came perched on a bed of mashed potatoes, and slashered in gravy.
It was delicious, the roast beef was tender juicy and very flavorful, and the yorkshire pudding was perfect.
A good gravy too.
I went back several times for the same dish (and a few pints of strongbow LOL)

But after not visiting for a while, I recently went back and was unhappy that the prices had all been increased, and when I ordered my beloved yorkshire pudding, it had shrunk, and the meat seemed like sliced deli meat.
I was really disaponted.

I’ve stopped in a few times since, and mostly stuck with the burger (which is ok, but nothing special).

I miss the old days when the food was good, and the value was better, I hope they shape up

Great sandwiches

California sandwiches is a bit of a secret, by secret, I mean it is hidden away, and you really would have no reason to be in the neighborhood unless yuo are headed there for a sandwich.
So because it is hidden in a residential area, all of the customers (and there are many) are there because of word of mouth.

I had heard of California for a long time before I ever got there.
There are many bakeries throughout Toronto selling veal sandwiches, but as good as a sandwich was, someone would always say California is better.
I jumped at the chance when a friend offered to take me there.

Walked in the door and was greeted by about a dozen people waiting for their orders, and the wonderful smells of fresh breads, and cooking sauce.
I went up to the counter and put in my order and was told it would be 15-20 minutes.

I learned that it takes a while because they don’t even bread the veal until your order is placed.
The sadwich was just as good as everyone told me it would be.
I enjoyed it in the small seating area that they have inside along with an order of spicy olives.
I will certainly be back

I was told I had to try this place, so while I was in New Orleans I headed up past the Garden District to give it a try.
It’s very popular with the locals, so expect a wait.

After looking over the menu, I realized it wasn’t the best idea to head here without looking at a menu, it was mostly seafood (that looked fantatic) but I just don’t eat it.

I settled for a chicken dish that was quite good, but it was very clear seafood was the specialty.

Wonderful fish

I’ve previously raved about Chippy’s fish, but I am almost sure that Reliable serves a tastier fish than Chippy’s does.

I had seen the place on Restaurant Makeover, and was impressed when the chef they brought in told him not to change the fish because it was perfect (meanwhile he was tearing the rest of the menu up)
So I decided I wanted to try their fish, and was lucky enough to have a chance to a few weeks back.

The fish was a good size, but the breading was what brought it to another level, it was perfect.
The only reason Chippy’s is still my favorite fish and chip place in Toronto is that their french fries are much better than anyone elses.

If they find a way to make better chip’s than Chippy’s, they will be my new favorite

mmm, burrito

Big Fat Burrito is a great shop in the heart of Toronto’s Kensington Market that sells fresh made to order burrito’s.
They offer steak, chicken, shredded pork. vegetarian and yam burrito’s (and have recently began offering their breakfast burrito (stuffed with scrambled eggs) all day.
Service here is quick and very friendly, and they have a nice seating area that is a great place to sit and watch the people of Kensington come and go through their giant windows that open to the sidewalk.
I have tried and enjoyed all but the vegetarian burrito, and all are highly recommended.

chicken, mmmm

Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth is the heart of Midwestern hospitality. In its ten dining rooms, which can seat more than 1,500 guests, Zehnder’s offers a full-service menu that features all-you-can-eat family-style chicken dinners, seafood, steaks, fresh baked goods and European desserts.

For $17.95 you can order the family style chicken dinner, it includes the flolowing :
Includes Noodle Soup, Cabbage Salad, Cheese Spread and Chicken Liver Pate With Garlic Toast, Stollen and White Breads and Butter, Preserves, Cottage Cheese, Relish, Frankenmuth Golden Fried Chicken, Grandma Zehnder’s Dressing, Mashed Potatoes, Gravy, Noodles, Vegetable, and Ice Cream.

It sounds like a lot, and wow it is a lot!!!
Everything is very fresh, because everyone in the place is ordering the same thing so that is all the kitchen makes.

I’m going to Frankenmuth again this weekend and can’t wait to have it again

Great Cajun

I’ve only been here twice, but if I am ever in town again I will certainly eat at FFB.

Last time I was there (around a year ago) started with the Southern Fried
Dill Pickles 5.59
cajun mayo & vapor sauce for dipping

Wow the were good, I wish I could find food like that in Toronto.

For dinner I had Muffuletta
grilled ffb focaccia bread topped with french quarter
olive puree, jack cheese lettuce & tomato
traditional: (ham, pepperoni, & salami) 7.89

It was nearly as good as the muffaletta at Napoleon House in New Orleans!!
Plus it was served with delicious sweet potato fries!

I was sad I was too stuffed for dessert since the meal was so good I’m sure it would have blown me away.

So when in Cleveland, be sure to have at least one meal here

Horrible

I live near the Scarborough Town Centre, and was very excited to see Jack Astor’s being built because for years the only food at the mall was at the food court.
I remembered a few trips to the JA’s in Mississauga, and how great the food was, so I was expecting the same.
Man was I wrong.
First off, the service is horrible, none of the servers seem capable of keeping up with the large number of tables they are assigned.
Used to be that as soon as you sat down, they would bring you a complimentary loaf of fresh baked garlic bread, they still have the bread, but now they charge you for it (and it’s nowhere near as good as it was.
The menu was made over a while back, and they tried adding a bunch of entrees that their kitchen staff seems unable to make properly.

I went a few times, and was disapointed every time, I’ve since stopped going.
Stay away, the food is overpriced garbagr
