Everything
Hyde park is my Austin staple. There’s basically everything you could want on the menu, and it’s all great! You have to get the fries (they’re famous! a half order is more than enough) and then go for it! Great casual atmosphere; you can feel comfortable in shorts and a shirt or Sunday clothes.
Dishes I tried:
Fries
Seasoned perfectly, sauce they’re served with is amazing
grilled chicken alfredo pizza
some of the best I’ve had! Great, crispy crust
meat loaf
I’ve heard people compare it to their grandmother’s!
Tuna steak sandwhich
a great, light dinner meal. The bread it comes on is almost as good as the tuna itself.

Veggie Heaven
Veggie Heaven is a small, family owned, impersonal restaurant with a HUGE menu and fast service. You seat yourself and hardly communicate with your waiter, but the food is wonderful. Everything here is vegetarian (a lot of vegan options, as well). My favorite dishes are made with vegetable protein, which I recommend for you meat-eaters! All in all, you’ll find something you like here—a good first try is the “Protein 2000” located on their favorites menu, and don’t forget the wide selection of bubble tea!
Dishes I tried:
Protein 2000
Great dish—kind of like Orange Chicken with brocolli, but its vegetarian and a slightly different taste.

Curry Heaven!
One word: Korma…and you’ve got to try this sweet curry from the Clay Pit! Korma is my favorite item on the menu, but I’ve tried all of their curries and have never been disappointed. Each dish is customized to your preferred level of heat, from mild to extra spicy, and nothing is complete without a basket of naan, which is kind of like an Indian pita. I’d recommend any varieties with galic on it. And for you celiacs out there—almost everything on the menu is gluten-free. Just ask your waiter!
The food isn’t the only reason to try The Clay Pit—the atmosphere is like sitting in the middle of a low-lit wine cellar, but you can fit in whether you’re wearing jeans or business professional. And remember—parking is free in the lot to the left (right before you get to the restaurant on Guadalupe) after 5:30, so you shouldn’t have to worry!
Dishes I tried:
Korma
Sweet coconut curry, the best I’ve had! Perfect with paneer.

Favorite Sushi!
The best sushi restaurant in Austin! The fish is always fresh and the experience there is incredible. Very upscale, but with a more casual atmosphere. The chef creates some wonderful sushi dishes: there’s everything from the standard rolls to sushi served with fruit. I definitely recommend trying the Shag roll!

Happy Hour
Kyoto is very good sushi and a cute little place downtown for a great price between 6:00 and 6:45 when they have happy hour and half price sushi! If you split 4 rolls you end up spending around $15!
Dishes I tried:
spider roll
longhorn roll
I’m not sure there is actual raw fish in here, but the sauce it comes with (burnt orange) is just a little spicy

05/18/2008that dish sounds really delicious, but i have to say, “protein 2000” is kind of an off-putting name. it sounds like a bodybuilder’s drink. still, i’d eat tofu under any name. thanks for the review!
