Unimpressive food and lackluster service

The food at DiCicco’s, even though it is billed as “Italiano Autentico,” is the basic equivalent of what you could make at home by boiling some water, tossing in some pasta, and heating up a jar sauce like Prego or Ragu. The servers fail to understand even the most simple basics of working for their tip. They seem disinterested, they aren’t friendly, and the restaurant just has the feel of an Italian restaurant run by people who don’t know how it’s supposed to be done. The kind of folks who frequent fast-food restaurants or have a cupboard full of Chef Boyardee at home probably love it. I give DiCicco’s an “E” for “Effort,” but with so many other superior Italian restaurants in Silicon Valley to choose from, I can say that I went there once, wasn’t impressed, and won’t be back. They also trumpet their patio dining, but it’s right smack dab on Bascom Avenue, one of the busiest main drags in the valley.

Dishes I tried:

Rigatoni and meatballs

One meatball, nothing to stand up and cheer about. Sauce that tasted like it was straight from the jar, with an acid taste that comes from people who don’t know how to make sauce. Had a side salad…a handful of chopped lettuce with a tomato wedge on top. The waiter acted as if he’d just gotten up from a nap and didn’t come close to a smile during the entire dinner, and I went out of my way to be courteous and friendly. He just sort of staggered through the paces as if he’d rather be anywhere on earth than working in DiCicco’s Ristorante Italiano Autentico. I calculated my 15% tip to the penny, and he certainly didn’t earn it. I had to flag him down for more water and he seemed a bit disturbed by my request.
