Like being there
I’ve enjoyed Thai food since college, when a place 3 miles away in Pomona that stayed open until 3am became our second home and Thai iced tea fueled many a study session. I visited Thailand in 1999, including Bangkok.
Barn Thai reminds me of being there. The owners are great, the food is not too Americanized, and they care about eating. If you’ve been to Bangkok, you might appreciate the strip mall that surrounds Barn Thai, which has a certain look to it…
Best to go for a late lunch, since it seems to be very crowded from about noon to around 1:15p or so. And don’t be scared off by the small lunch menu, they have a wide variety of great dishes that you’re better off ordering off-peak. Also note that they can make any dish vegetarian, including Thai egg rolls and soup served with lunch.
Dishes I tried:
Yellow Curry
Some places will overcook the curry coconut milk mixture, others will add extra vegetables, still others go thin. Here the yellow is nice, the sauce is rich but not too thick, and it’s got the usual Thai curry stuff in it.
I prefer it will beef, though the usual with served with chicken.
