Tartan Room

Jan 3, 2008 Link

Anachronistic

A student of mine put me on to this place. and said the food wasn’t fantastic but pretty darn good and she was right. She also said it had an old school steak house menu, she was right again, this is the kind of menu the rat pack ordered off of. Tucked into a hole at the back of a shopping center the tartan room has one small, faded space on a common sign on Tustin Ave. and a lighted sign on the facade that simply says restaurant. the decor inside is faded as the aging cougars in the bar, the restaurant patrons are ancient, a few that looked like amusement park caricature sketches were hard not to stare at. The only updating attempted in the last 40 years is the 80’s era halogen bulb hanging on cables over every table that makes you feel like you are on stage in some weird puppet show . The amiable golden girl Flo of a waitress was efficient ,professional , knew every other customer by name and left me wishing she knew my name. The food was there hot, fast and more than competently cooked. Seemingly the Tartan room has been doing this a long time and has it down pat. The food was good enough and the ambiance odd enough that I’m going back and would recommend it to friends.
We both were full and ended up taking food home

What I ate:
  • ****

The fillet mignons and stuffed potatoes were good, the vegetables not overcooked, the bread was not horrible and there were plenty of butter packets on the table.

  • ****

My dining companion, a prime rib connoisseur, said the prime rib was very good.

Extras:
I came here for
fun with friends
My meal cost
between $25 and $50
I tipped
between 15% to 18%
