Poor service and even poorer food

It’s not very often I leave a restaurant utterly disappointed in so many ways, but M&S Grill at the Bridgeport Mall managed to do just that.

First of all the service was very poor. I should have known we were in for trouble when we were placed in the last booth beside the kitchen, but it got worse. Our server (Jeff C) was very patronizing, and seemed genuinely disappointed when after multiple attempts to serve us alcohol, we firmly but politely said that we only wanted water and iced tea with our meal (one look at M&S’s hyper-inflated wine and drink menu must explain how they pay their rent).

It was clear from the conversations I overheard from the staff, that there were a great many unhappy patrons there tonight. I overheard a few servers talking about comping meals..

Service as a whole was inattentive. I mean, should we have to ask for iced tea and coffee refills? How about clean utensils between dinner and desert courses? There was clearly NO shortage of staff in that restaurant (in fact it seemed overkill at first glance) so I don’t see what the disconnect was. The overwhelming majority of the waitstaff appeared either angry or frustrated.

Dishes I tried:

1/2 Dozen Oysters on the half shell

Terrible start to our dinner. All six oysters were of completely different size, ranging from rediculously small to outrageously large. It appeared that they were placed together haphazardly. The cocktail sauce was a fiery mix of 70% horseradish and 30% cocktail sauce. To make matters worse, five of the six oysters had pieces of broken shell in them. Oh yes.. Oyster six, lest I forget this little morsel.. This oyster was absolutely rotten and made it into my mouth for a millisecond before it was spit out. I’m still sick to my stomach. BTW, I’m still feeling nausea from that last oyster. I said something to my server who offered to serve me another (like thats just what I wanted)

10oz "Bronzed" Rib Eye Steak

Arrived to my table not medium rare as I requested, not rare but luke warm and raw inside. I immediately pulled aside the nearest server (my server Jeff C apparently wasn’t available to check on our table even after the oyster incident) showed him what the problem was and the dish was taken back to the kitchen for a re-fire. Came back medium well a few minutes later. Steak itself was entirely too thin (maybe 1/2 inch) and fatty to be worth $24.95 even if cooked perfectly. Asparagus on the plate was cooked properly but unseasoned and the garlic mashed potatoes were undercooked.

Finally, something I hoped would at least take the taste of dinner away. The trio consisted of three ramekins filled wth a chocolate pot au creme (which was actually quite nice), a creme brulee (very plain tasting and lacking the use of real vanilla), and a berry compote with a shortbread type of crust (not bad actually once you hammered through the crust)
