Comfort food
The best latin-influenced restaurant in Montreal according to the Mirror’s Best Of Montreal poll. And while that poll is not exactly a reputable source, in this case I’m inclined to agree. If you like mexican or chilean comfort foods, this is the place to go. They have a sizable menu that can serve any appetite; either eat-in or take-out. Starting with a variety of empanadas, hot sandwiches, and all the way to full mexican dishes of burritos, quesedillas, nachos… the list is long and everything is delicious. If you’re still hungry take a deep fried churro for dessert. You won’t regret it!
Dishes I tried:
Burritos Chicos
Two small burritos filled with beans and the protein of your choice (chicken, beef, tofu). A few nachos on the side with no less than four dipping sauces (guacamole, sour cream, salsa, and hot sauce). Wins every time.

Japanese with attention to detail
Don’t be fooled by the nondescript exterior. Once inside you’ll enjoy a cozy Japanese decor and friendly service. The meal may take a little extra time to arrive, but once you get it you’ll see why. The attention to detail is immediately noticeable, especially if you order the Moriawase combo plate. If you’re in a strictly sushi mood, there’s a decent list to choose from, all carefully made fresh for your enjoyment. Sit at the counter if you’d like to see the master chef’s meticulous work in action. Otherwise, settle down in one of the many booths, or head to the traditional low-rise Japanese table at the back.
Wherever you sit and whatever you choose, enjoy!
Dishes I tried:
Chicken Moriawase
Combo platter served on a unique tray divided into five or six compartments. There you’ll find grilled chicken with sticky white rice and a thick brown sauce, vegetable and shrimp tempura with their own loose dipping sauce, bean salad with finely sliced vegetables, an assortment of sushi rolls, and a few other surprises. Dessert changes daily but sweet tapioca pudding and creamy sorbet both spring to mind. To start they offer a miso or mushroom soup, and a pot of tea.

Homebrewed beer with some interesting food choices
As soon as you step inside you can already tell that HELM is a pretty cool place. The decor is decidedly modern, all the way to the stone slab sink in the bathroom. And yes, they have the homebrew beer which is always nice. Nothing crazy in the variety department, just the usual white, red, stout, cream ale, etc… Which is fine; I never say no to a nice homemade pint. But what really makes this place interesting is the short food menu. On this list you’ll find homemade chips, foie gras, trout tartar, and the acclaimed mini veal burgers. Or do what I did: go with a group and order the everything package!

Speedy Italian Grill for sit-down lunch on a time budget
I love this place. It’s so convenient. So efficient. Quite spacious. Moderately friendly. Clean. And most importantly, tasty.
Choose from about 25 different personal pizzas with a wide variety of toppings like artichoke, zucchini, italian sausage, chicken pesto, and the list goes on. If you’re not feeling pizza then get the Suprême pesto burger with fries (trust me). They also have some pasta dishes that look decent but I’ve never tried. Some nice local brews on tap as well! Did I mention I love this place?
If you’re going with a group for lunch make sure you get there before noon (or reserve). They have a decent amount of space but the regulars will fill that up in no time. I don’t know what it’s like at supper time but I’m sure it’s still quite popular.
Dishes I tried:
Burger Suprême
Juicy beef burger topped with a pesto sauce. Never had pesto on a burger? You’re missing out! Served with a generous helping of perfectly cooked fries.

Homemade soups and sandwiches, prepared fresh daily
Inconspicuous lunch spot hiding along the restaurant-laden St-Viateur strip. Go here when nothing but soup will do! The menu changes daily and they usually offer a choice of four soups and four sandwiches. You’ll pay more here than some other sandwich places but the quality and originality of their creations is worth the extra loot. I’ve been here many times and am a big fan of their Indian-style lentil soup. Any sandwich with Avacado is also delicious. If you like to try new things, this is definitely worth a visit. They also have a couple of homemade desserts if you’re still hungry after.

Breakfast and burgers all day
Serving delicious breakfasts all day long! A small selection of sweet and salty crepes (mostly ham), some omelettes, benedicts, even burgers and other red meat. This restaurant is really small, so if you’re heading there around lunch time try to arrive a bit before noon to secure a table. The staff are friendly and be sure to say hello to the chef on your way out (right behind the cash register). So far I’ve only tried the breakfast but I’ve heard good things about the burgers.

Fine Italian Dining
The freshest bread you’ve ever tasted! Full lunch table d’hote (choose from four main dishes) for under $20. The service is prompt and pleasant. They also have a few wine selections that are sold by the glass. The food is plentiful and the presentation is simple but elegant. We had a delicious fruit salad in a martini glass for dessert.

Mom's home cooking
Small cozy spot that only serves weekday lunch. You’ll swear you walked into your Mom’s kitchen back home.
Maryska’s sparse menu serves up two choices that change daily. Just check the little chalk board outside to find out the day’s specials. For one price you’ll get everything you need. Some bread, some soup or salad, the main dish with sides, and possibly a dessert. It’s simple, it’s effective, it’s reasonably priced, and most importantly, it’s tasty.
Stop by if you’re in the area! Just make sure you arrive a few minutes before noon or the limited seating may already be occupied.

A Little Birdy Told Me...
An inconspicuous spot in Mile End that you could easily walk past without noticing. But for those who pay a little closer attention, the reward is worth it. Look up and you will see a simple black and white sign depicting a bird; a sparrow, to be precise. Step inside for lunch or brunch and choose from a small selection of dishes in a variety of styles, freshly made and cooked to perfection. The menu changes every week, so be sure to check their facebook page for the latest mouth-watering roundup.

They’re getting a liquor license one day, at which point they will open for supper too.
Dishes I tried:
Hamburger and fries
Delicious and sizeable burger on a fresh bun with lettuce and I think tomato too. It came with a modest portion of fries and mayo for dipping. I also ordered a green salad on the side.
Everything was quite enjoyable and obviously fresh. The fries were soft and tasty. The burger was very juicy. The salad was a mix of greens and radiccio, with I think some endive as well, topped with a mostly oil-based dressing.
For dessert we tried both the chocolate cake and the maple cake. Both were topped with cream (different styles) and both were exquisite. If only there was more!
Overall a pleasant experience. The menu is diverse, the quality is high, the prices are not cheap, but reasonable. Will definitely go back.

Healthy Veggie Paradise
Delicious vegetarian meals in a relaxed setting. Typical filled with local students, artists and writers. Depending on the night you may even stumble upon some performing musicians. The food is fresh, wholesome, home-made, and healthy. The portions are appropriate, rather than absurd. The staff are friendly and the decor is eclectic. Depending on which table you choose, you may mistake it for someone’s kitchen! Sit in the front window and people-watch, or hide in the back and work on your screenplay. Highly recommended.
Dishes I tried:
Veggie burger
As veggie burgers go, this is an amazing find. Thick flavorful patty on a small bun with a few unique side dishes that I’m forgetting at the moment. Don’t hesitate!
