A love of New York translates to an ongoing love affair with the things that only a New Yorker knows, from the Dr. Zizmor ads in the subway to the landmark that is Papaya King. Accept no substitutions, this is what a hotdog is supposed to be, and the juices are delicious. No seats, but it’s a perfect place to duck in and grab a perfect snack on your way to somewhere else.

Great mexican, and very accomodating if you’re particular about what you like. This is a favorite date place and on a cold night there’s even a fireplace to settle in by.
You definitely must try the combo plate, where you can select three or more of any number of items, from tacos, tamales, empanadas, enchiladas, to fantastic chile rellenos in any combination. The queso is also great, as is the complete menu of tequilas and related tequila drinks including incredible margaritas if that’s your thing.
Otherwise it’s not a place for lightweights, so prepare to tuck in a load of reasonably priced cheesey goodness. The only downside is the location, but it’s worth the drive to Monmouth Junction, I promise.

Huge selection of all kinds of food, classic Americana and regional food interpretations with something for everyone.
My personal favorite is the bowl of tomato basil soup, though the steak gorgonzola salad, the old man’s nachos and anything with the wonderful sweet potato fries is worth trying. Save room so you can get up to go to the dessert case and oogle the huge variety of delicious cakes and cheesecakes before picking your poison.
The staff is friendly, the prices are fair, and being a favorite hangout of Rutgers students the atmosphere is perfect for friends and families alike.

Good food, upscale Americana with tasty burgers, soups and sandwiches. I imagine it’s more lively at night but if you go (and I say this in all seriousness) you MUST visit the bathroom. It’s on my definite list of must-see bathrooms in NYC, and that’s saying something.

Great classics and new twists on old favorites. The soups are huge so be prepared to share, but otherwise this place has been a wonderful lunch with friends or date location since I’ve been a little girl. Don’t miss the dumplings!

This place holds a really special place in my heart. I grew up in this pastry shop/cafe, I’ve licked the chocolate off of the top of the mini eclairs and had gran marnier chocolate birthday cakes since I was a kid, and the cafe itself holds many wonderful memories for me. Don’t miss the cakes, cannolis, eclairs or anything for that matter. Try the mini pastry sample plate. Go there with the people you love and enjoy every minute.

Very small, short menu but what they do they do well. This is a favorite stop when I’m shopping around in Soho with excellent burgers and salads, but my only complaint is the warm cans of soda instead of fountain drinks (nitpicky I know). There’s also an Aussie flair to both the staff and the food, and both are quite delicious.

Classic conveyor belt sushi, and one of my favorites. The place is cute, bright and friendly, and your place mats act as your menu. Grab the goods as they go by (or ask the guys in the middle to make you something, they’re perfectly happy to do so) and then stack up your plates and pay by plate color. It’s fun, reasonably priced, and a perfect place for lunch.

Great late night stop downtown, and well worth the time it takes to agonize over your sauce choices. I loved the curry ketchup, cheese and chutney, but I’ve heard wonderful things about the cheese curd and gravy. It’s good if you can get a spot to sit in this tiny place but the fries are easy to take for a walk. The cones are great to share but don’t be afraid to get your own! Really reasonable prices, and the fries are unparalleled.
