Wholesome Nourishment
Daniel Fritz – Staff Writer for the San Gabriel Tribune writes:
While my experience at Sandwich City is admittedly a bit myopic, there’s no question that if I were the adventurous type, this little sandwich shop in the heart of downtown Covina wouldn’t disappoint.
During the estimated 160 lunch breaks that I’ve had during my short tenure at the Highlanders, I imagine I’ve spent at least 120 of them with an egg salad sandwich on squaw bread from this quaint restaurant.
The turkey’s great, too, but I mostly stick with what I know.
While some might cringe to think what 120 egg salad sandwiches translates to in dollars and cents, Sandwich City’s modest asking price for each of their homemade-style sandwiches ranges between $5.95 and $6.95. For what you get — the sandwich, of course, choice of potato or macaroni salad and a pickle slice — it’s quite a bargain.
The fact that I’ve spent about $714 and counting on egg sandwiches should be testament enough. But don’t take my word for it.
A visit to the shop will provide a stress-free experience, with a friendly staff and, when compared to the bustle of most sandwich shops, serene environment.
The menu consists of sandwiches you might expect your mother to make if she had a culinary background and a flair for bringing creativity to two slices of bread.
With many of the creations named after well-known streets in Covina, a customer might feel as if they had truly arrived in the heart of the town.
Take the “Lark Ellen Avenue” for example. It’s essentially a waldorf salad between two slices of squaw bread. Then there’s the “Hollenbeck Avenue” sandwich that features roast beef, creamed horseradish, cheddar cheese with mayo, lettuce and tomato.
For those more interested in what’s healthy at Sandwich City, a variety of salads, within that same price range, are also available. Many feature different combinations of fruits, vegetables and meats, all invented with the hopes of satisfying the most picky of palates.
And for desert, I can certainly recommend the banana pudding. If you didn’t fill up on sandwiches, this little treat, served with Nilla Wafers and topped with whipped cream and almond shavings, will certainly complete the “well-rounded” lunch hour.
