A Fresh Start

A fresh Sunday could start from a fresh brunch at 35th Street Bistro.

Knowing that Fremont is always a good neighborhood to explore, I picked 35th Street Bistro, attracted by its intensive menu and positive reviews.

Being a French bistro, it’s very reasonably priced with good portion. So no worries about leaving hungry:)

An insider tip is that all the entrees either come or could substitute with fresh salad, which is only slighted dressed with olive oil. So be sure to ask for fresh salad or fruits, it will delight your whole day!

Dishes I tried:

Smoke Salmon Omelete

  • 3.0 star rating
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •

Honestly speaking, it’s less tasty than the one in Julia’s Wallingford. I think the smoke salmon is too salty, but i like the fact that they insist using egg white for omelete.

Biscuit

  • 2.0 star rating
  •
  •

  •

Biscuit covered with one sunny side up egg. It’s a bit dry and creamy but biscuit comes very big.

kobe beef burger

  • 4.0 star rating
  •

  •
  •
  •

i am not sure if they use the real kobe beef, cos the price would go much higher than this; but according to my frnd, it’s really big and yummy! hehe, that’s all that matters!

Big hit in SOHO

LUPA was known for specializing at Italian cuisine in SOHO area of NYC. Obviously, as a metropolitan city, NY deserves to have all the best quality food. While impressed with variety food during my short NYC trip, I still have my favorite – LUPA, in terms of quality, ambience and neighborhood.

Thanks to competition in the neighborhood, LUPA is reasonably priced but no skim at all on quality. I was very pleased with their nice presentation of food and attentive service. Portion might be a little small for dinner but perfect for brunch.

LUPA is a alway popular spot and packed all the time. So, Keep this in mind, always make reservation 2 weeks in advance if decide to go dinner; otherwise, you can only squeeze in brunch or bar table.

Dishes I tried:

Marinated Eggplant

  • 5.0 star rating
  •
  •
  •

  •

Wonderful! It might look small, but perfect portion as a starter. It carries strong flavor of olive oil and herb. The best i’ve ever had.

Breaded Black Cod with Honey Mustard sauce

I didnt order this but still got a try. Honestly speaking, it’s tastier than mine!

Market Fish with summer squash

I would have given it a 5-star if i didnt try black cod. It doesnt taste that strong but still good!

Decors up to its name

My “tempura lover” and “sushi lover” frnds highly recommended Maneki to me, and they come here almost once a week. I see it a big commitment, considering the hassle of parking in Chinatown area.

In kanji, Maneki means “to invite”, so I am kind of curious to find out how this place invites customers in. Not surprisingly, the whole place decors with “Maneki Neko (invitation cat), which stands for luck and asks for business prosperity.

Overall, Maneki feels like a homey restaurant with a lot of sushi choice. Food is not fancy goodlooking and simply tastes like mom’s meal at home. It could be a good choice for authentic Japanese food hunters.

Dishes I tried:

Ozen (Teriyaki chicken)

  • 4.0 star rating
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •

Miso soup; 4 pieces of sushi (sushi is big and comes separately), teriyaki chicken, tempura, salad, rice and melon. Chicken is special here, it’s a little breaded and very tender.

Sukiyaki

  • 4.0 star rating
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •

Miso soup, boiled beef, tofu, veggie, noodles, rice and tempura. Value hot meal.

Teriyaki Chicken & Tempura

  • 3.0 star rating

This comes a big plate of teriyaki chicken but tastes nothing special. Tempura & Miso soup come separately.

Motcha Ice Cream

A must try! Strong motcha taste. (i got it for free cos they messed up one sushi)

Pretty and Tasty French

While having totally different personalities – one arrogant and the other modest, both French and Japanese appreciate the beauty of food to a level of perfection.

Consistently ordering one dish is said to be a good way of rating food, so I decide to follow this recommendation to be a fair judge.

After tried Rikki Rikki’s black cod, I almost give up on all the other black cod. Be hopeful here, their French version black cod is both Pretty and Tasty.

Their Northwest Cheesecake is definitely an elegant dessert , sth. u can never get at QFC. What’s even sweeter about the dessert is their accommodating waiter made it for my special someone’s birthday treat. Wow, what a success!

Dishes I tried:

Pan-Roasted Black Cod

  • 5.0 star rating
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •

With sweet potato purée, escarole and forest mushroom sauce. Outside but tender inside; finished in no time _

Northwest Cheesecake

while décor with hazelnut and berry syrup, it is topped with a thin layer of berry sauce and even has assorted berries inside

Quick fix

We were on the way heading over to Thai kitchen, but the traffic got so stuck that we saw Tommy Thai in the corner.

Some reviews on menuism came to mind, so we decided to follow reviews for a quick fix. Yeah, foodha reviews saved our Saturday afternoon hunger!

Their selection is a bit limited, but tasted good, maybe just because we were too hungry. I’ll recommend it as a “to go” for future.

Also, do double check the price b4 pay bill, i think we were over-charged from menu price this time.

Dishes I tried:

Panang Curry with Beef

  • 3.0 star rating
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •

Beef sautéed in panang curry paste and coconut milk with carrots, bell pepers, basil and shredded lime leaves. I am not a big fan of beef, but beef tasted very tender.

Summer spicy with Tofu

  • 3.0 star rating
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •

Sauteed fried tofu with bamboo shoot, onions, basil, bell pepers, mushrooms, and carrots in a hot spicy wine sauce.
Wow, a lot of veggie!

Deep fried sushi roll with avocado and salmon. Think about a combination of Tempura and sushi roll, u’ll get a better picture!

Is it “for sure”?

We happened to step into this place when walking in downtown vancouver hunting for food. Kitto means “for sure” in Japanese, so we assume that it’s good for sure

Except a sushi bar, there are only a few tables, so it feels like an Izakaya in Japan. Tables are all taken by reservation, so obviously ppl like us came unprepared got to sit in the sushi bar.

Food came very fast, almost rit after we ordered, and the whole dinner only took 40 mins. It’s not quite quality meal but tastes all right; or it might just because we didn’t order sushi roll but only hot food instead.

It’s kind of funny that we didn’t know sushi Chefs are Chinese until we hear them talk in Chinese at the end, which made us wonder — what’s “for sure” here?

Dishes I tried:

Tofu and Avocado Salad

  • 5.0 star rating
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •

Fresh tofu, tomato, cucumber and avocado topped with seaweed. Served with their house dressing. An interesting combination and everything is fresh!

Pork Ramen

  • 2.0 star rating
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •

This is a big bowl too but the majority is noodles. There are at most 4 pieces of pork and a few sprouts. It might be a bit disappointing to someone expecting a balanced dinner.

Teriyaki Salmon

  • 3.0 star rating
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •

2 long slices of salmon with steamed veggie. It tastes good, but don’t expect too much.

Generous Asian Catch-all

I am so surprised to find this place for its Asian Catch-All menu.

Being a modern Asian cafe, Chinoise has both a sushi bar and spacious table seating.

Chinoise is probably more known for Japanese food from look, but menu tells all: From walnut shrimp, pad Thai, to Vietnamese curry and sushi roll.

Obviously, it’s hard to get authentic Asian food here, but u will be very satisfied with its Asian catch-all food within a single dinner~

Dishes I tried:

Agedashi Tofu

  • 3.0 star rating
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •

It comes 4 big pieces and tastes good. U’ll like it more if u prefer not too salty food.

Sichuan Spicy Shirmp & Scallop

  • 4.0 star rating
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •

It’s Sichuan style, but NOT spicy! Big shrimp, deep fried scallop come with bamboo shoots and broccoli. It’s very generous!

Vietanese Curry Chicken

  • 5.0 star rating
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •

Little spicy, but bigger than usually. Chicken is surprisingly tender, u can also find yam, onion, potatos, basil and baboo shoots.

Tea

  • 1.0 star rating

  •
  •

Not sure about the price, but unless u really want it, dont try it — so tasteless.

Seafood is everything here!

It’s not hip or trendy, it’s awesome seafood! I keep going the one in Lake Union, dinner at waterfront with slightly dimmed table can be very romantic, even for a family dinner (my dad likes it too). My first two salmon tries were not as good as expected, a little overdone; the later two crusted fish fillet tries were almost perfect if they come with bigger portion (~I am usually not that greedy).

let's go Cedars!

I am not a big Indian food fun, but Cedas is a good one in U-district worth checking out. They have a variety of selections, not limited to curry. Huskies I know from school all love it, and going Cedas seems to be part of school culture already. Their interior could get u a little sick, but such a mysterious atmosphere is what lots of people go for.

Dishes I tried:

Garlic Nan

  • 4.0 star rating
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •

It comes with big portion and two different curry sauce. A cheap but good starter.

Mango Curry (Fish)

  • 4.0 star rating

  •
  •
  •

Tender fish absorbing all the curry sauce; might feel too creamy after finish~
