Pott's Doggie Shop

May 26, 2008 Link

Potts Dogs beats Yocco's Death Rockets

Pott’s Dogs are superior to Yocco’s in everyway. They do not have the death rocket repeater effect with that spray painted on thin gruel of an excuse of a so-called special sauce. Sorry Iacocca family…your last hit was Lee’s Mustang at Ford.

What I look for in a dog (Jimmy’s down Easton way has the same…) is taste, taste, taste, and texture, without being reminded hours later (except for maybe the onion breath) by stomach boil. I do have a cast iron stomach, so for me it takes quite a lot to roil it.

What I ate:
  • *****

As a good hot dog should be, piping hot, good bun, not too soggy, not too crunchy, good balance of toppings and consistency. Onions not too bland, but not too biting. Fun food you eat and forget about. No need to savor in burp fashion hours later.

Stefanos Restaurant

Mother's Day for 8

The review prior to this one could have been written by me. My group of 8 showed up at 12:30pm on Mother’s Day as well. The back dining room was not completely full with two empty tables. Drinks took too long to receive, we finally got them at a little before 1:00 pm. Food showed up in drips and drabs almost 45 minutes after we ordered.

I was shocked at, not the prices, but the proportions. The mozzarella salad was about a skimpy as they come, so were most of the other appetizers. Evidently Stephanos has decided not to raise prices but to just give you less food. I was almost ready to complain but was really in no mood to make a scene, with 8 people there for a celebratory Mother’s Day, which is not typical for me. I let it slide.

One of my guests had to ask for more spaghetti sauce, it was as if they had spray painted it on, the amount was so thin. The food was good but there is surely better value elsewhere. Either that or they were just cashing in on Mother’s Day thinking that only pikers go out for lunch/dinner on this day.

Because we had 8 in our party, they automatically added the usual and quite presumptively arrogant gratuity for crap service and skimpy portions. Then they leave a space open for an extra tip! BULL!

I am not going back. Why do restaurants think that they can get away with this sort of thing? You’d think that with the current economy they would not want to drive anyone away! There are tons of other places to try…at least once.

What I ate:
  • **

Price was fairly standard FOR A REGULAR SIZED PROPORTION! However, Stephanos proportion was about as skimpy as could be, it was so small they served it on a small plate. I do not think I have gotten such a small appetizer ever. I thought that they had originally split up one order on to two plates but that was not the case. We orderd two and got two, extremely small portions.

Jack Creek Steakhouse

May 6, 2008 Link

Slip Sliding Away...

Our whole family used to really like Jack Creek Steakhouse. The one on Catasauqua Rd, not the one in Stockertown which, rumor has it, has closed? It is very hard to figure. Competiton in this area has gotten far more intense with a few more choices within a mile of Jack Creek yet they raised their prices significantly, their steak cuts have gotten most definitely inferior and pricier and their meal salad prices are ridiculous!

I went there the other night for dinner and ordered a Porterhouse Steak and a salad. The side salad was lacking almost all evidence of anything green with several huge chunks of white heart of iceberg lettuce and had a token slice of tomato, two thin slices of onion and three croutons. the Porterhouse was the thinnest cut of steak I think that I have ever had save for when ordering ribeye in a ribeye sandwich. The tenderloin section was almost non existent and the NY Strip section was mostly all gristle and fat. This cut cost $21! I have travelled to other cities that have far higher costs of living and gotten far superior steak for the same money.

What has happened to Jack Creek? It is most certainly not the same place it once was and is now off of my list after several disappointments over the past six months.

If you are going to go here, stick with the tex-mexi cuisine. It is still tasty and still somewhat reasonably priced but steer clear of the other offerings. Someone is getting greedy here… If they are going to charge the kinds of money for food that they currently do, at least they can make it worthwhile.

That is it for me… I used to bring out of town guests here, no more. I don’t want to hear the complaints when there used to be compliments.

Your name has “STEAKHOUSE” in it. Act like it!

What I ate:
  • **

Poor value for money. Jack Creek appears to be trying to trick the buyer by making the steak cut seem the same size but the slice is very thin. This restaurant is going downhill from what used to be a very fine value for money place to get very tasty and satisfying food.

Odd since there is so much competition in the general area. I tipped adequately since it was not the waiter’s fault that this place has slipped a few notches.

Confetti Cafe

Apr 28, 2008 Link

Negative Experience Lesson for us...and them...

Ate at Confetti Cafe with my family a number of years back so the review is not valid for today other than to say that your first negative experience at any restaurant is usually your last…

We got a basket of bagel chips and started digging in to find that there were half eaten pineapple rinds in the bagel chip mix. Now what does that tell you? Someone else got served the chips, didn’t eat them all, threw their rinds from some other dish into the basket, the waiter picked it up without looking and threw more chips on tiop and re-served it to us. Yeeeccch! Besides that, it is definitely a health violation! We called attention to the matter and we got neutral looks from the waiter and the manager wioth an, ooops, sorry… It was deliberate! They were trying to economize their chip ration and it was probably standard practice to re-use uneaten chips!!!

We laugh about that to this day and steer clear of this place no matter how good it might be. There are other good restaurants on the same street. Just a mental thing! GROSS!!!

BTW, tip was ZERO! No choice for that option in the drop down menu

Pickles Steakhouse

Apr 14, 2008 Link

Our steaks were superb!

I ordered the NY Strip, my son, the Filet Mignon. Both were among the best steaks we have had over many restaurants both local and out of the area. Not quite top honors but close enough to want to come back again. Both steaks were prepared exactly to order. The only thing missing (my fault for not ordering) were mushrooms. The grilled veggies were done perfectly, good crunch, very flavorful. The iced tea, often overlooked as a review item at many restaurants was very enjoyable (some restaurants serve iced tea that tastes like swamp water, one in Bethlehem on Linden St in particular and time after time as well).

Business was brisk for a Saturday evening but not overly crowded, the waiter was very attentive, iced tea glasses were ALWAYS full (and did not cost extra for each one like another restaurant I did a review on in Easton…). Dinner rolls were unremarkable, cold and basic out of the bag (not a biggie for me but would have been a nice touch to round out the other high marks). A nice touch would be hot sour dough bread and variants. The pickles, served as an appetizer, were crisp and obviously a greeting signature food when arriving.

What I ate:
  • *****

Prepared exactly to request, good size for the price, juicy, very tasty. There was a small, but very acceptable amount of fat for flavor.
One of the better steaks for the price in my estimation in the Lehigh Valley. Good value. I give it a solid “A” but shy of an “A+” (compare to Gregory’s – lots of steak, very poor quality and an overall rating of “C-”.)

White Orchids Thai Cuisine

Mar 24, 2008 Link

Great Menu Items, DON'T STRAY!

I have dined here several times and find the menu items to be fantastically prepared and good value for the money. Having been to Thailand, the cuisine is close to authenitc with only a few substitutions for items hard to get seasonally here in the States.

However, I made the mistake of ordering what was totuted as a special – Kobe Steak. I have had Kobe Steak before. THIS WAS NOT KOBE STEAK or if it was it was the absolute dregs! Kobe Steak is fine grained and very tender, this piece was course, muscular, and very tough. The piece was supposed to be medium prepared and it came out well done and had about 40% blubbery FAT on it. It was not tasty but was the tecture of cardboard and tasted very bland. Hard to believe since it came with such a “generous” portion of fat still attached to it! I was not given a knife (as would be expected with a REAL piece of Kobe Steak, it can be cut with the edge of your fork or with your butter knife, no such luck with this piece! The waiter had to fumble into the kitchen to get me a kitchen knife). They rocked me for $35.00!!! I have had far better cuts of generic steak for half of that price! I was ripped off and I do not know why given the high quality and value prices of most other selections!

All I can say is to stay away from the specials, especially steak based ones! Very disappointing! Shame on trying to pump up profits by serving such inferior cuts of meat and trying to pass it off as Kobe Steak!

Suberbly Brewed Beer - period!

Rating is for Beer only. Far too many high calorie fried food offerings for my tastes. Definitely lower class unhealthy bar food in my estimation. I go here to have their premises brewed beer, period! If I am going to do something “unhealthy and highly caloric” let it be the beer…!

Sogo

Jan 28, 2008 Link

Very tasty cuisine

Sogo’s food is, without a doubt, very well prepared fusion cuisine biased towards seafood, sushi and sashimi. There are also offerings for the non-
seafood lover but these are somewhat limited and rather skimpy in proportion. As I stated, the food is prepared better than good but I think that Sogo is starting to take its press clippings a bit too seriously. Their prices are starting to peak out to the point where I seriously doubt that I will be back. What galled me the most at the last sitting was that they charged for every serving of iced tea – 9 glasses for a total of over $25! Their server also did NOT listen when we ordered dessert. Rather than inform us that certain desserts were unavailable and allowing us to choose again, she rudely sustituted desserts of her choosing. We found out only after partaking. She appeared to be dismissive of our comments. These desserts were higher priced than I had remembered the last time we dined there.

This place is on the leading edge of getting snooty with their offerings for price. It is becoming like a few other restaurants in the Lehigh Valley area who have totally blown their value for price ratios. Well prepared food also has its price limits! It is not an elastic concept. Do not get me wrong, the food is quite good. How much are you willing to pay though?

Again, beware the upcharges for each additional glass of beverage! I tipped down accordingly! What was supposed to be a carefree birthday celebration at a place we had all dined at before and had returned to for this occasion, had turned into a less than stellar experience with me, the bill payer, feeling ripped off.. We will most likely not be back. with so many other great choices in the Valley of late!

I am amazed that a place like this will risk folks not returning by such pricing behaviors. Competition is fierce in this industry to risk ricky tick behavior in any way. BYO Beverages when you go!
