Columbia Bakery

Aug 4, 2008 Link

Get here early!

Possibly the best bakery in Nanaimo. The owners are helpful and friendly. The line ups are quick but unavoidable. Glazed doughnuts like you remember them. Dinner Rolls, Crusty buns, Italian Loaf. Rye Breads in three different weights (light, medium, heavy). A very small sit down area where you can purchase something and if you want it warmed, pop it in the microwave. Coffee has allways been fresh and available.

What I ate:
  • ****

Simple take away food that is healthy & decadent at the same time.

Extras:
I came here for
a meal on the go
My meal cost
less than $10

Amrikko's By the Sea

Jul 20, 2008 Link

Watch your change! Check your bill !

This Indian restaurant is very good when it is good. And 90% of the time it is very good. The most consistent complaint about this place is the habit of charging extra dishes to your bill. If this happens once or twice over the lifespan of a restaurants life span, – O.K But I have personally had it happen almost every time I go there and friends boycott the place for the same reason. When I go as a group I always insist on Separate bills to keep track of the Items. The Naan Bread & Pakora’s are too dye for. Tandoori dishes are very good if a bit on the dry side. The butter chicken is very good and probably the house favourite. Any Lamb dish is tasty. I find the spinach dishes a bit mild and not as good as other places but the other dishes make up for it. Bottom line – If your not willing to hassle the staff about their screwed bills I advise you give this a miss.

What I ate:
  • *****

Classic Butter Chicken at it’s best.

  • *****

    Any Lamb dish is good

  • *****

    Great vegetarian dish.

  • *****

Potatoe (That’s the way they spelled it) and spinach Naan are $4 and frankly not as good but still worth ordering

Los Dos Amigos

Jul 18, 2008 Link

Great meal

We traveled to OK after two weeks in Texas were the next restaurant is the best Mexican meal. When we finally landed in this bleak military city the Culinary Highlight was Los Dos Amigos. The waitress was super friendly & efficient and gave helpful hints as to what to order. I don’t remember the name of the dish but it was prepared with a Tomitillas sauce and it literally blew away every other mexican meal we had.

Extras:
I came here for
a family meal
My meal cost
between $10 and $25
I tipped
between 15% to 18%

Nauticals Seafood

Fish & Chip Heaven

Sometimes this is the best Seafood Restaurant in Nanaimo. Fish & Chips is actually a choice of 5 different fish cooked up to 4 ways. The only drawback is that it is located on Stewart Ave. which in the summer months is the line up (really long line up) for BC ferries to Vancouver. It is always busy & crowded but if you don’t mind that then this is the place

Sake House

Jul 18, 2008 Link

Good Thing the Sake is warm!

The service is shitty. The menu confusing. When the food did come it was not as we ordered and the waiter made no attempt to fix it. The food was mediocre at best. I have friends who are regulars here but I wouldn’t touch it with a 15 barge pole.

What I ate:
  • *

The menu said steamed Gyoza and we got Deep fried. Waste of time and money. I swear if the were not next to a Casino the would have gone out of business long ago.

Amazing Thai Restaurant & Take-out

Jul 18, 2008 Link

Truly Amazing

I appreciate going to a Restaurant and being served food that is consistently better then I make at home. The owners of this restaurant also own Amara’s Thai in Qualicum village. Our favorite dish is Cashew Chicken $8.95 (Gai Phad Mamuanghimmapan) . We start with Chicken & Prawn satay $5.25 – $6.95 served with a peanut sauce or Fish or Chicken Patties (Tort Mun) $4.95. The other dishes we tried are Pad Thai $8.95, Amazing Thai Noodle $8.95 and coconut rice. The Tom Yum Soup (Chicken $8.25 – Prawn $8.95) is very good, probably the best I have tasted but it a meal for oneor more. Very healthy serving of soup. The KHAO Phad (fried Rice) is another pleasure or maybe try Phad Prik Tua (Pork with Green beans). The hotness of the food is very adjustable and some like it hot, very hot or explosive. Not me, as medium is fine and my wife likes it medium.

What I ate:
  • *****

Two options here with either Chicken or Prawn
