I would like to think of myself as somewhat of a food connoisseur…I will usually order the most obscure thing on the menu, just to try it, My true loves are seafood, oriental cuisine (sushi, thai etc..) Other fav’s include Greek, Mediterranean foods

The McDonald's of the Sushi World
Ambiance 2/5 | Food 3.5/5 | Service 3.5/5 | Overall 3/5
Ambiance
When I walked into this place i though i was walking into a fast food joint. The place was super busy, which normally indicates good food, so i was optimistic. I walked up to the cashier and ordered Sashimi, and to my surprise, they did not offer it. So, I went with my other favorite order of Spicy tuna roll, extra spicey, and a california roll. When i recievied my order, I then asked for a bag for it, they directed me to their little condiment bar (hence the mcdonalds feel), The condiment table included pre packaged soy sauce in little cups, also they had the packages, chopsticks, napkins, even a self serve ginger jar (intersesting but i dont know how fresh it was).
While i was sitting there eating my spicy tuna roll, I noticed how efficient this place really was, they had a sushi machine, where you insert the seaweed leaf, and it puts a pefect .25” of rice on top, these guys were on top of it. Next to that there was a tempura making machine. This is the origional fast food sushi place in vancouver. Move over starbucks, i can see this place being fanchised out. Their system is flawless.
Food
The Spicey tuna roll was okay, nothing spectacular, but not bad either, the size of the rolls were perfect. The thing with this place, everytime you go your food will be exactly the same.
Price wise, this place is actually really cheap, so expect bang for buck here.
Service
The service is fast for take out with your order taking 5mins or less.. and they seem to have a lot of pre-packaged sushi which seems fresh, as there is a huge amount of traffic going through this place. My quams with the place is this, when i go for sushi, i wanna enjoy my surrandings. This place had all the feels of a fast food place, but it was a sit down restaurant. There really wasn’t any waitrers/waitresses taking orders, it was all done at the cashier at the front.
Summary
Good place to go for a quick sushi take-out for real cheap. But don’t plan to eat-in. You will be disappointed
-

-

Great Wall Mongolian BBQ

A lil Bit of a show while you eat for dirt cheap!
Food 4/5 | Ambiance 3.5/5 | Service 3/5 | Overall 3.5/5
Food
This particular Mongolian grill place is different from your run of the mill Mongolian place. The difference here is that you don’t pay for your food by weight. They basically have 2 types of menu options, the all you can eat (self explanatory), or the pack your 1 bowl as much as you can. The price difference is fairly small anyways with both options under $10, even for dinner.
The way this place works is you go to buffet bar which has uncooked meat (pork, lamb, beef, chicken), vegetables and a assortment of about 12 different sauces you can choose from. They also have recommendations for different combos of sauces. The only downside is the meat slices are sometimes really small, when selecting you meat look for the large pieces as the small ones will just crumble up when grilled.
I usually go for the pack the one bowl as much as you can style lunch, as i have figured out you can pack quite a bit into those little bowls. The trick here is to actually lay down the meat flat when you are putting it into bowl.
Ambiance
Once you have your bowl full of what you want to grill up with your various sauces, you give your bowl to the Grill chef who is standing in front of a huge circular grill (you can see him from outside the storefront). The chef then begins to grill your food right in front of you with a talented display of chopstick skills.
Service
The service here is decent here. The place gets really busy at lunch, and sometimes there is a big lineup for getting you food grilled if you go at peak times. So i would advise maybe avoided the peak lunch hours whenever possible.
Summary
A great little place go to, for a cheap, filling, and entertaining lunch or dinner

Shabusen Yakiniku House

Shabusen, Go for the all you can eat BBQ, stay for the sushi
Food 4/5 | Service 2.5/5 | Ambiance 3.5/5 | Overall 3/5
Food
For BBQ this place is awesome, the all you can eat sushi menu is fairly small compared to other places in downtown. (i.e. robson sushi, Tanpopo). I started frequenting the Granville location first before i found out about the Burrard Street location. Now this is how I do it when we go there, first off regardless if no one else is using the BBQ, which for some reason during lunch no one tends to use it. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT. Here is the key to success with the BBQ they have 3 different flavors, Chicken, Beef, And Pork… Okay the thing with the chicken is it takes a lot of effort to keep it going, so i usually stay away from it, the spicy pork is not soo bad and the beef is perfect, so we load up usually 3 orders of beef at a time, and try to order everything you want from the rest of the menu right then and there.
Service
The place is super busy alll the time, service at least for ordering is slow, and you may want to make reservations on the weekend. The food will come quickly once your order has been taken, but thats the tricky part, getting them to TAKE YOUR ORDER!!!
Ambiance
This is the cool part about Korean BBQ, they have a little barbecue in the middle of your table, where you control the barbecuing part., the decor is interesting as well, they have a sort of boat table where you must remove your shoes to sit around… this is a great place to take large groups. The Granville location boast private rooms with seatting for those extra large groups, I think we had a table for 15-20 before.

Go Thai

Thai food like no other, this place is HOTT!
Overall 3.5/5 | Food 4/5 | Ambience 3/5 | Service 4/5 |
FOOD
I would have to say this is one of my favorite Rhai places… I usually just stick with the basics and get the Pad See Ew When I go there, but just about everything on their menu is excellent. The Currys are top notch with very distinct flavouring. They will make just about anything on the menu, mild, medium or hot according to what you would like. The place used to be a thorn in new westminsters side when it was duffys donuts.
Ambiance
But the new owners have remodeled and cleaned up the place. I am not saying tis beautiful, but for what it is it does the trick. It kinda still has that truckers top feel to it, but really clean.
Service
The service is good, food usually comes within 10-15 minutes upon arrival. I think most of thier business comes from takeout/delivery.. And yes they do deliver..
One more thing they have a menu available online, which in my opinion is key to the success of this style restaurant
-
Pad See Ew - (chicken beef or pork)
Flat rice noodles stir fried with an egg and broccoli in thai black soy sauce… extra spicy of course..And man was it good!!
Top Gun Sushi

Top Gun Sushi... Great place for large groups
The ambience in this place is amazing.. situated on top of New Westminster Quay. Service is really good. This is an all you can eat type of menu. . The restaurant is Huge, boasting a amazing view of the now flooding fraser river. The ika karagge is pretty decent, the spicy tuna roll is pretty good.. My one downside to this place is that they charge an extra 2$ for the all you can eat sashimi. and if 1 person on the table gets it the entire table must pay the extra 2 dollors.
They also have a small self serve salad bar featuring kimchi potato salad ?!? and some other pretty useless items i would say…
All in all, I do frequent this place quite a bit, but i guess i just have a grudge about that extra charge for the sashimi..
Real nice place to take a date for a fun lunch

Amazing All You Can Eat Sushi menu
This is, hands down, the best all you can eat Sushi Menu i have ever been to… For 15$ including tip you can eat from an huge lunch menu, and get a free refillable pop during the whole experience.. if anything this is bang for buck. their terryaki get served on a hot plate and is quality to say the least.. spicy tuna cone is really good, ika karagge is slightly over cooked but still pretty decent..
For the full experience i would recommend going for dinner The only sushi place I would pay for their dinner menu. with a price tag sitting around 20$, i usually would rather just go for the lunch menu, but in this particular instance, their dinner menu is amazing, serving all you can eat Tuna Tataki, and really good prawn tempura, their dinner menu is about 4 pages long and jam packed with Japanese goodness, everything from motoyaki, to tuna tataki, to ebi sushi.
In the end this is a great place to go, whether for lunch or for dinner.. You will be pleasantly surprised. It recently took my best sushi all you can eat title away from Tanpopo, so you know its bound to be good

Best Dumplings in New west.. Move over Hons
Honestly, has some of the best dumplings i have ever had, i ordered it for delivery which they do.. it was made farely quickly, the portions were large, i had leftovers for today.. and all in all a great experience
-
Beef Black Bean, in mushrooms
A really delicious, fresh tasting Beef & Black Bean sauce…. the mushrooms were just enough, it was a really large portion, had 2 very large helpings and had left overs today from it.
-
Hot & Sour Soup
This soup, in my opinion wasn’t all that great, they make it with peas, which i think spoils it, another downside was it wasn’t very thick, or spicey, and had too much tofu in it….
-
Pan fried (homemade) dumplings
this comes with 8 very large.. amazing dumplings, this has to be my #1 choice for dumplings, surpassing Hon’s by miles, i would say.. the Vinigar sauce that they supply you with is slightly stronger thaan the pink one from hons, and i would say adds a lot more flavour… yet it isn’t too overpowering… when going to this restaurant MAKE SURE YOU GET THE DUMPLINGS :)

Best Sushi take out in New West
I used To work right accross the street from this place so I would eat hear regulary, i would stick to the basics, California Combo which is just a california roll and 4 piece nigiri sushi, with a miso soup, and a extra spicey tuna roll, extra spicey of course.. the bill comes to under 15 with a pop in the mix, and tip… honestly if you haven’t done so and are a sushi lover you need to check this place out… my only con on it is they have messed up the order for me on occasion when i have called it in, but hey everyone makes mistakes..
