Mediocre Fish & Chips
It is ironic that even though The Purple Onion labels itself as a steakhouse, I went there for its Friday special of fish & chips with my mother. It seems to be the only place to serve fish & chips in the Junction.
To begin with, the actual restaurant has a nice modern burgundy deco design. The booths are comfortable and that’s what I chose to sit in. There’s various eating paraphernalia on the table such as HP sauce , vinegar and ketchup. The waitress that served us was cheerful and friendly.
I ordered the fish & chips with a Coors Light while my mother ordered Greek salad and garlic bread with the fish & chips special.
As somewhat of a beer aficionado I was disappointed with the Coors Light. The beer came in the standard bottle and not draught but the waitress did bring me a glass with the bottle. The beer itself tasted a bit off, somewhat skunky and wasn’t as chilled as I would have hoped.
Overall the pricing for the items were fairly cheap at $7.95 for the fish & chips and overall everything came out to $36 for the meal. The place was nice, the service was alright, and the food could be improved in both taste and portion size.
Coming from the Junction I definitely enjoy supporting local restaurants so I’ll probably give it another chance with maybe its steak menu however I won’t be returning for its fish & chips.
Dishes I tried:
Fish & Chips
The plate came with 2 portions of fish (most likely halibut), tartar sauce, a good amount of fries, and also coleslaw.
The fish portions were small with a lot of it just being fried batter. The fish itself tasted pretty great but there was just too much batter for my liking. The tartar sauce had a nice zip to it
The fries were pretty standard fare although some were overcooked and crunchy.
The coleslaw was by far the worst part of the dish. There was practically no dressing on it making it very dry to eat.
Greek salad
The Greek salad didn`t come with black olives so it tasted a bit awkward.
Garlc bread with cheese
Normal sized portions. Chewy and moist enough to taste the cheese. There could be maybe more cheese as its more expensive then regular garlic bread.
