"Food was very mediocre here but the service, and atmopshere are great. If you are not a true vietnamese food lover and just want to bring a date to a nice place with dimmed lighting and a low sound level, than Le Colonial would be good for you. But I wouldn’t go here just for the food, I prefer Bong Su or even Slanted Door.
FOOD: We ordered a few apps and a couple entrees, none wowed me and one dish was pretty sucky (sea bass).
Ca Hap La Chuoi: Steamed Sea Bass in a leaf- This was so sad because it was dry! Chilean sea bass is naturally really oily and tender, so it must have been seriously over-cooked. Not a happy camper here :(
Tom Nuong- Grilled Prawns with Tamarind Glaze- These were pretty yummy. Nice big prawns over a cabbage slaw.
Goi TOm Hum- Poached Lobster salad- Little pieces of lobster tossed in a salad of shredded cabbage, cucumbers, and a fish-sauce-like vinaigrette. It was pretty good but very few pieces of lobster!
Dau Dua Xao- Wok Tossed Green Beans- the typical stir fried green bean but I prefer Betelnut’s version, which is more flavorful and spicy.
COCKTAILS: Where Le Colonial shines—awesome cocktails! And I don’t even like mixed sweet drinks but I loved their passion fruit puree cocktail. Their lychee cocktail was pretty yummy too. We didn’t try anything else but the cocktail menu had many exotic choices ( lemongrass, passion fruit, etc) as well as the classics.
SERVICE: Service was casual and friendly, and prompt.
Altogether I’d come back here for the atmosphere (dark, quite enough for dates) and cocktails (exotic and yummy), but not for the food (mediocre, pricey for what you get)."
