fish and chips

I’d heard 2 good things about this place so I tried it last night with a friend. I was not impressed.

I ordered the combo fish and chips with clams. The clams were mosly so small it was like eating fried batter. I added some vinegar to the fish. It was still bland. I salte it. I had to finally dip it in tartar sauce. Also, the fish had a lot of dark meat, which I don’t enjoy. The chips were decent.

We also split an order of fried zuchini strips (everything on their menu is fried, by the way). They were over cooked and the zuchini inside the fried shell nearly evaporated into nothing. My friend commented that they were more in an armoured shell than battered.

My friend ordered the combo with oysters, which were also overcooked and not at all fresh. I don’t think anything was fresh, as it seemed clear that everything was frozen and then deep fried.

To tell you the truth, I think Long John Silvers has better fried fish.

I’m hoping I caught them on a bad night and I will try them again. But after eating fish and chips in London and all over the states, I’m just not impressed.

One thing that bothered me greatly was no ice. I asked for water with lots of ice. I was told they have no ice. I was given a glass of water, slightly colder than room temp, and with little white specks floating throughout. (I don’t drink soda and was driving so I didn’t have a beer.)

I will say they had a great atmosphere.

Delicioso

Great little place with food you wouldn’t expect from a strip mall type restaurant. I love little hole in the wall taquerias, so I was a little hesitant to make this my first attempt at Mexican food after moving to Pacifica a few weeks ago.

One thing that let me know it was going to be good was seeing them fry up tortilla chips fresh.

The food was good, the service quick and friendly and the tables were clean.

The place lacks in atmosphere and is loud and cavernous. But I’ll be back.

I had the al pastor. It was quite flavorful and very filling. It came with lettuce, cheese and quacamole. It was more like a burrito than a quesadilla, but no complaints there.

They also gave me a boat of fresh chips with pico de guillo, which I thought was an odd choice. Not big on onions, I picked the tomatoes out and wound up using the chips to add crunchy texture to my quesadilla.

Best Italian around

2 years ago a friend of mine brought me here for lunch. Ever since, when in need of a quality place to go with out of town friends, I would drive from SSF to dine here. I’ve never been disappointed!

The food is always good. The service is friendly and quick and generally by quite lovely young ladies. They have decent coupons, for take away only.

I will often order a pizza when my meal arrives and take it home for later eating! (Coupons offer a large 3-topping for $13)

Very good food from a quaint little place!

Soft and crusty bread, large meatballs, zesty tomato sauce and stringy cheese with fries. Large meal. Great meal. I also recommend the appitizer serving of meatballs.

The lasanga was about the best I’ve ever had from a restaurant.

Great pizza

I love pizza from Papa Murphy’s pizza. Call an order, turn on the oven and go pick up the pizza. Get home, pop it in, and wa-la!

I always ask for mine with “heavy on the sauce”.

Not for breakfast, anyway...

Nona’s opened at 1130; Salada Beach Cafe was closed for the holidays and Nicks was having their carpets cleaned. I saw the open sign in the window so I suggested we give it a try. My friend’s mom had to be at the airport at 1030am so our time was precious.

The view was fantastic, J was visiting from Israel, so she enjoyed watching the surf and the surfers.

The prices were a little high, but not too much so. We figured with a view like they have, they would be a little high.

The service was slow and the wait staff were difficult to understand, as they had heavy foreign accents.

I was asked if I wanted coffee. My cup was not turned over, while my 2 guest’s, were. I said no. He proceded to turn over my cup and fill it. Later we had to ask for the $2.50 to be taken off. He looked at my full cup of cold black liquid and reluctantly agreed.

I had the eggs benedict. The hollendaise sauce was almost non-existant and the ham (not Canadian bacon) was thin. The eggs were over cooked at tasted heavily of vinnegar. The potatoes were hard (undercooked) and quite greasy.

My friend had poached eggs with bacon. They were good, but her potatoes seemed as hard and greasy as mine. They forgot the orange garnish on her plate. J, the mom, had scrambled eggs with bacon and potatoes. She didn’t complain, but the portions were small for the price.

The ladies wanted milk for their coffee instead of cream. The first milk came in a glass. You know what happens when you pour milk out of a glass? It spills down the side and onto the table. The next batch came in a gravy boat. While better than a glass, it was still awkward.

The service was slow. It took us over an hour for what should have taken 35-40 minutes. Not understanding the wait staff was irritating. I’ve had better breakfasts at McDonalds. The bill for the 3 of came to $32.

I would hope their dinners are better, but with so few quality breakfast choices open to us, they could have done so much better. Their tables had linen and it was a nice place, just that the breakfast, actually, sucked. I’m writing this an hour after leaving and I’m already hungry for lunch.

Hardly any hollendaise sauce, overcooked eggs that tasted of vinegar. Small portions.

Can't Zaman!

I’m shocked to see so many stars for this place. Yes, the staff was casual and friendly. Yes the atmosphere was fun and lively.

But that’s where it ended for our party. We had reservations for 15 Sat night. No issues there. But for large parties, we were only able to order from the large party menu. There were 3 grades to choose from, and the prices were fixed, from $18 per person and up.

The food was served family style. No issues here either. But the portions were small. We each got one (1) stuffed grape leaf, and rather small, to boot.

In the end we paid $38 a person for what basically was a dinner of hummus and flat bread, 3 bites of lamb and rice, a meat pie, a cheese pie, overly smokey baba ganous (sp?) and dessert.

I would only recommend this place if you have money to burn and want a light meal in a crowded, loud place, where the floor shakes under the feet of anyone who passes your chair.

I should add that we had a few more people show up so they got their own table. They had a pitcher of beer and split some appitizers. They finished with coffee. The plan was to head to another place for a bit more to eat. But after getting their bill of $71 (for 4 people) they decided they couldn’t afford dinner elswhere.

The food wasn’t bad. Small portions. One stuffed grape leaf per person. Cold flat bread. Baba Ganoush was too smokey. Over priced for what we got.

Moms

My friends all love pies. We gather once a month to go camping and I pass by Mom’s. Finally, after more than a year of passing by, I decided to stop and give it a try.

First thing was a potty stop. Nice roomy bathroom with unframed poster art.

Next, order a sandwich. I chose the turkey on rye. While that was being made, I gave the pies a lookover. I don’t like apple pie, so selected a small cherry pie.

The girl behind the counter was really nice, and knew of the camp ground I was going to, since she lived in that town. She handed my food to me and I was off.

When I ate the sandwich, I was happy with it, but for the $7, it wasn’t anything special, certainly not as good as Mia’s in Molalla (see my review here).

As for the pie; it was pretty good, but not as good as my grandmother made. The crust was sort of thick, like I could taste the crisco.

The outdoor seating is nice, and if you are in the mood for sandwiches and pie, it would be a great place for repast.
