Good, Basic Mexican Food

This restaurant qualifies as a hole-in-the-wall kind of place to eat since, from the outside, it’s not very flashy or anything, the inside is kind of plain, and the menu is very basic and kind of limited. What makes it a true hole-in-the-wall kind of restaurant is the fact that even though the menu is kind of basic, what they do serve is very good indeed. They have decided to only serve stuff they can be sure will please people who dine there. Service was attentive on the two times I’ve eaten there for lunch. Overall, I recommend it to those who like out of the way places that serve very good food and if you are into deep fried jalapenos like I am, this is the place to be.

Dishes I tried:

Chile Verde Burrito

Burrito needed a large plate since it was filled to the brim with chunks of pork in a sea of green verde sauce. MMM Good!

Heart of the Aviation Community in Seattle

A 60’s style dive that once was a Denny’s, this gem of a restaurant looks like a place no historical preservation society would be out to save but when you enter the dimly lit interior, you find a bee hive of activity from the aged waitstaff and torque wearing chefs in the Denny’s style kitchen. Went on a bright sunny Sunday around 10 am for breakfast. Had a few cars in the lot so it looked promising. Anywho our stomachs were grumbling so it wouldn’t have mattered if the lot had been empty. There is literally no where to eat at that end of Boeing Field.

When our eyes adjusted to the dimness inside, we got the shock of our lives. The place was full of people all enjoying themselves and the company they were with. If there hadn’t of been families in this bunch, I would have said the bus from the senior center had dropped everyone off but that was further from the truth. We had tourists from Deutchland visiting some of their countries finest down the street at the Museum of Flight sitting next to us and a construction worker who had gotten off shift earlier eating at the counter table across from our table. Overhead are replicas of various aircraft in different sizes as well as aviation memerobilia on the walls. The service is diner indifferent (truly American) but the food wasn’t bad. I saw on other websites that this place can be inconsistent in service and food but I was happy and full when my companion and I left an hour later.

Dishes I tried:

Chicken Fried Steak

Rather than deep fry the chicken fried steak, they pan fry it under a bacon press which gives it a remarkable crunchy coating that was outstanding. Hash browns crispy and perfectly browned.

Simple yet Complex

This former fast food establishment has turned into one of the best Asian restaurants in the Kitsap area. The place is not very big but I always see a few people in their whenever I stop in to have lunch. Great food and fast service. The menu has a range of Chinese, Japanese and Korean dishes, all of which are simple yet are complex in flavor as well. They don’t really do dessert but when you have a donut/bakery shop next door, its a win win situation for everyone.

Food - Great, Service - Sucks

I admit I love food, especially foreign foods. Above all though, I love Asian food so when I stopped in at Hakata’s in Silverdale, I was duly impressed with the quality as well as the nice selection of their menu items. The food is really good but the service operates on an “we’ll get to you when we can” system. Don’t take it personally because everyone gets the same treatment.

The nice thing about Japanese cuisine is that it is very healthy for you and you don’t end up with a bloated feeling at the end of it all. My friend had a teriyaki dish that she had to take home with her because it was too much of her (lite eater) while I had a donburi which is a rice bowl with meat and vegetables on top.

Taste of India

Went with a friend and ordered off the menu. When we walked in, the odor of gas coming from the flames under the fairly large buffet was off putting but after a few minutes, you got used to it. Might be a ventilation problem. The menu has a large selection of dishes from many different aspects of Indian Cuisine, with many from the southern style of Indian Cuisine which is vegetarian. Most dishes are large enough to share so feel free to have a little of this and a little of that. It’s all good. Loved the spiciness of the dish I ordered and my friend loved the complexities of her dish. Finished with a very sweet dessert that almost put me into a sugar coma, it was that good.

Personal Service

I guess my family arrived between the lunch and dinner times because of the 6 or 7 tables inside, only one was occupied with diners, who looked like they were finishing a great meal. You know the type of meal, where you are in a haze at the end of it because you had all that great tasting food with different flavors and textures. Classic bistro food cooked to order in the kitchen just a arms reach away from the table. Wine or not, you are still gonna have a great meal here. Bakery items are offered and are outstanding. While dining, had a few people just stopping by to buy from the bakery items.

The ultimate steak pizza from the best small cafe around. All hand made with a spicy kick. The pizza is called Santiago because all of the toppings reflect the flavors of Chile (South America).

It made me cry!!

Was in Eugene for a visit to my aunt and uncles for the Fourth of July weekend. My uncle dragged us all around town and we ended up at this barbeque place where they serve brisket and ribs and stuff. There were two sauces on the table and two you had to ask for. I have to say after the fact that the food was great but the sauces topped it all. The hottest came out in a little butter dipping dish and they warned me to take it slow. I started dipping my Southern Fried Okra in the sauce and soon ran out. They brought another portion of the hot stuff and as I’m eating my ribs, the tears are just flowing down my face. I asked and received a third one since I ran out of the second one using that one for my ribs. The third one ended up in my sweet bbq beans and slathered on my corn muffin. That was the best lunch I’ve had in years!!

Tiny restaurant with a line out the door at Dinnertime

This is a friend of a friend kind of place because it is so special. Only a handful of tables so it has that cozy kind of feeling but the main thing about this place is the food. Talk about good! You know the food is great when the calamari comes out suculent and non-rubbery and stayed that way even as it cooled. The salad dressing on the house salad is a secret recipe Mama is not giving out and I don’t blame her. They serve typical taverna style food that makes you ready for a trip to Greece and the Greek Isles.

Dishes I tried:

Calamari

Tender rings of calamari, served with Skordalia and their special cabbage sauce – Alot of the time I’ve had calamari, it comes to the table and is nothing more than rubber bands coated with breading, but this calamari was tender and the breading was light. The two sauces, Skordalia which is made from potatoes and doesn’t even taste like them, and the special cabbage sauce which is a light vinegared type of cole slaw that was perfect with the calamari.

Dragged by a good friend to Great Food!!

I was visiting a good friend in West Seattle when he proposed we go out to Indian food. Indian food? This had better be one great meal I replied. He said that it was really good but it was located in Tacoma. Tacoma? Ya, Tacoma. I ended up kicking and screaming most of the way there only to find that it was really great food. If you love Indian food or just want to give it a try, this family run establishment is the place to go. Nice selection of Indian Vegetarian dishes as well as Lamb and Chicken dishes. No beef dishes because cows are sacred in India but you will not miss having beef at the meal.

Dishes I tried:

Gosht Vindaloo

Enough for two people. Great seasoning – lamb cooked in a creamy sweet and sour sauce with potatoes.

Still in the Family

Due to a recent divorce, the restaurants name has changed to the New Hong Kong Restaurant but the food is still as good as ever. Everything in the previous review still applies – great ventilation, fast and efficent service as well as a quiet atmosphere.
